Our dad Larry Pacl, joined our ancestors peacefully in the early hours of this morning. I am okay, a bit relieved but very sad. Dad lived a long, rich and productive life as a scholar, lover, father and a warrior in the US Navy. My America and my world are colder today, a huge part of my life just strolled off. I was a young scared warrior in the depths of Mississippi over four decades ago when he and mom Norma adopted me and introduced me to the best of America and helped me navigate her seamy side. They are in my stories, but the best ones will remain unwritten. It is what it is. Dad was a fine leader, the lovable patriarch of the family, with a gentle and loving side, my fondest memory of him are of stamps, trains, computers, simple meals on barbecue grills, America, family and that twinkle in his eyes, hands in his pockets, whistling something as he showed off his latest train acquisition. They don’t make them like him anymore. My children saw the beautiful side of Nigeria through the beautiful Nigerian stamps he collected and sent to me. So today, he handed us the last batch of stamps, and strolled into the last train out come dawn. We will collect our stamps ourselves from today on, dad has done his part. I shall miss my dad, but I am glad we all got to visit and spend quality time with him. Oh man! He was such a kind man and an incredibly important part of my worldview. It is what it is. Goodnight, dad. I love you.
