Bill Guerin, the Minnesota Wild and Team USA GM has praised Auston Matthews during their Gold medal run. A guy would consider lifting his NMC since he knows he would be wanted in Minnesota and many Toronto Maple Leafs fan booed him upon his return from the Olympics. As far as the assets go, Auston HAVING A NMC could make it hard to the Leafs and say he only wants to go to Minnesota, and also say he won't sign again with Toronto. Then the Leafs would be left to keep him and lose him, or trade him to Minnesota with the hope that they won't be too greedy and give somewhat fair value. It's touchy.

@fredette @NHLRumourReport The Wild don't have anywhere near the assets to pull off a trade for Matthews as it is, and he has a full NMC... so he'd actually have to want to go to the Wild in the first place, which is questionable.

Top teams probably preferred to save their tradable and valuable assets for a potential Auston Matthews trade this summer. The Minnesota Wild comes to mind. #MNWild It doesn’t take away from the value of Vincent Trocheck but the possibility of Auston Matthews becoming available has increased, and therefore teams must pile and reserve their assets for him over Trocheck.
