Talked to some seriously impressive MI advocates who shared their blueprint + some very good and concrete tips for fighting highway expansions. (Spoiler: get to know your MPO!)

. @MichiganDOT plans to turn I-375 into a giant surface highway (up to 9 lanes wide!) while cynically calling this a "Reconnecting Communities Project". Detroiters are pushing back - please read and sign their open letter here:

Last night I gave an update on our Ann Arbor bike counter project during the Walk Bike Washtenaw @WBWCgo annual meeting. Below is the link to the slides in case anyone's interested.

@KatyNightwine @jenncornell @DharmaAkmon @fenggroup I'm not sure if there's anything to back up "all of the business are suffering bc the cars can’t get to them". The two linked articles show some of the positive economic impacts of protected bike lanes. bikeleague.org/sites/default/… peopleforbikes.org/statistics/eco…

@jenncornell @DharmaAkmon @fenggroup Absolutely. My family owns property where they just stole all the parking meters and added a bike lane. I was there the other day for an hour or so and saw…..a whopping ZERO bikes!!! And yet all of the business are suffering bc the cars can’t get to them to shop or dine at.

@fredzannarbor @damnarbor @A2GOV It doesn't. But it doesn't make "wear bright clothes during the day" a good recommendation to the injured party from the dangers that would not be there if it weren't for motoring. We would not recommend the public, b/c safety first, to wear bullet-proof vests from gun violence.
English

@damnarbor @A2GOV Disagree. Safety first.
Does "wear dark clothing" make any sense as a recommendation.
English

@DAnalogArsonist @A2GOV Unfortunately, many so called "common sense safety tips" have been selectively used towards people outside motor vehicles and as a way of victim blaming. About 40% of drivers hospitalized after a crash had a brain injury. Is it "common sense" to ask all drivers to wear a helmet?
English

@DAnalogArsonist @A2GOV One fundamental problem w/ recommending people wearing bright clothes just to not get hit by cars is the moral issues. The excerpt below elaborated it in more detail on another "common sense safety tips" of wearing bike helmets. I hope you find it helpful.

@NHTSAgov More on bike helmets: Very well put by @ianwalker in their recent paper psyarxiv.com/nxw2k/
English

.@A2GOV I don't think we should ask people to wear bright clothes during the day just to walk or ride a bike on our streets and stay alive. Let's not feed into the narrative of victim blaming. a2gov.org/departments/en…
