Faith Factory
Go to factory in the morning,
work 12-hour shifts.
End of the month,
the Maalik keeps most,
gives some to the workers.
On the way home,
the worried worker looks towards the temple.
School has asked for extra money this month.
The priest shouts,
“Do your prayers,
give some to the god,
the god will make things better.”
The temple has a plaque
thanking the Maalik and the politician.
They made a large donation to the temple
from the money that was saved
by laying off people,
after the politician helped pass a law.
The politician’s entourage arrives,
greets the cameras,
announces a new road to the temple,
a corridor to salvation,
contracts already signed
with the Maalik’s cousin.
Many from the factory
take this road
and come to the temple,
hoping for a miracle
that can help pay the school fees.
But there are so many people
who need a miracle.
In a rush to get closer to the cement statue,
built from the Maalik and politician’s donation,
they trample over each other.
Many die,
slippers strewn everywhere.
Next morning,
the factory hums again.
The Maalik thanks the Lord.
The priest counts the offerings.
The politician lights another lamp.
A mother goes to the temple
to collect her child’s slippers.
She finds them beneath the banner:
“Service to God is Service to Nation.”
