Today we honored the more than 230 Black boys who died at the House of Reformation and lie in unmarked graves. And today, we announced that we are restoring their burial sites. Their stories deserve justice and their souls deserve eternal peace.

Barbara was a lawyer and the first African American to be elected to the Texas Senate since Reconstruction, the first southern African-American woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, and one of the first two African Americans elected to the U.S. House from the former Confederacy. She was known for her oratorical skills, and achieved national fame for her televised opening statement at the House Judiciary Committee hearings during the impeachment process against Richard Nixon. John Coltrane gave Alice Coltrane a harp, not long before his death in 1967. After losing him, Alice made it central to her music, using it to build the spiritual, otherworldly sound that defined her later career.

He was born into slavery in Danville, Virginia in 1857, worked as a longshoreman, and lived to be 113, photograph by Richard Avedon, 1963.... Casby was born into slavery in 1857 in Danville, Virginia, just four years before the Civil War began. Emancipated as a child after 1865, he came of age during Reconstruction and later worked as a longshoreman. By the time this photograph was taken, he had witnessed slavery, the Civil War’s aftermath, Jim Crow segregation, two World Wars, and the early years of the Civil Rights Movement. Avedon photographed Casby as part of a series documenting people who had been born into slavery, creating minimalist portraits against stark white backgrounds to focus entirely on the subject’s presence and expression. The image is both intimate and monumental, the elder’s weathered face beside the softness of new life. Casby reportedly lived to be 113. When Casby was born, James Buchanan was president and Abraham Lincoln had not yet been elected, yet he lived long enough to see the presidency of John F. This is Linda Davis, a special education teacher who was killed in a car crash involving ICE agents The agents didn’t render aid. She was minutes from her school and bled to death in her car. They didn’t offer aid to Renee Good or Alex Pretti either. Say her name too.

The first National Conference of Colored Women was held on July 29, 1895, in Boston. It was organized by Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin, a civil rights leader and suffragist. Speakers included Margaret Murray Washington (the wife of Booker T. Washington), anti-lynching crusader Ida B. Wells, scholar Anna J. Cooper, civil rights leader T. Thomas Fortune, and social reformers Henry B. Blackwell and William Lloyd Garrison. It marked an important moment in the fight for civil rights and women’s suffrage. It unified numerous Black clubs into the National Association of Colored Women, emphasizing education, social justice, and anti-lynching campaigns. The rise of Kamala Harris, the first female Vice President of the United States and the first woman of African and South Asian descent to hold the office, is a testament to the enduring impact of early Black women leaders who championed equality and representation.
