CPJ calls on Angolan lawmakers to protect freedom of expression as they debate the Dissemination of False Information on the Internet Bill this week and to ensure that it is compatible with the rights guaranteed in Angola’s constitution and international covenants. At the discussion stage, which began on May 6, lawmakers have the chance to introduce amendments to the bill, which secured a first approval in a parliamentary vote in January. Once parliamentarians reach a consensus or if the ruling party decides, the bill will proceed to a final parliamentary vote. CPJ is concerned by the bill’s vague language, which can be widely interpreted by law enforcement agencies to censor the press, in an environment where regressive criminal defamation laws are already weaponized against journalists. In its current form, the bill could jail individuals for up to 10 years and close companies for more than 300 years for disseminating “false information.” The law also applies to overseas journalists who disseminate false information “that has impact in Angola.” Read more: cpj.org/?p=533242
