@GrammarTable As a writer/editor specialising in the performing arts, I wholeheartedly agree. Related: keeping up with whether American symphony orchestras actually have the word "orchestra" in their name or not.

Keeping up with "theater" v. "theatre" in theater names burns off a lot of calories.

@Paul_McCreesh @thetimes The legacy of iTunes, and others (because of the complexity of the metadata). All music was referred to as "songs." Now, for anyone under 25, all music is called a "song." I am battling with students, reminding them that symphonies and string quartets are not "songs."

@kalthorN8 @keshavchan @soychotic And Finder Preferences has always (well, for a very long time) had the option of hiding external drives etc. from the desktop if desired.

I was using it. Windows comes with a pre build folder structure for pics, videos, documents, downloads, etc. While certainly possible with mac, it wasn't there by default. I definitely hated connected drives appearing on the desktop screen. I was lead to believe mac os was just better, faster, and things just work. That was all untrue for me. A ssd instead of an hd makes Windows just as fast in most cases. I'm not saying mac isn't better for some but it definitely isn't for me. I don't consider myself a power user or a programmer, although i have dabbled. I just think Windows had a better ui. The typical windows user will try to troubleshoot their issues rather than taking it to a pro. Replacing worn or outdated parts is normal for a pc. Apple wants you to just buy a new one.

Can someone do a correlation study on kids who were started with mac computers versus windows pcs and tech illiteracy or even just general problem solving skills because I have a Hypothesis

@kalthorN8 @keshavchan @soychotic FWIW, image of Mac Finder from 10 years ago. Default structure included dedicated folders for images, videos, downloads, etc. It was all there. Mac and Windows directory structures have been quite similar for a very long time.

@kalthorN8 @keshavchan @soychotic So you weren't using Mac's Finder? It's virtually identical in appearance and function to the Windows directory (Explorer, yes?) and works the same way.

Folder structure is possible on Mac but not as good as default windows with the user folder. Any external drive was another icon making the screen cluttered. I tried being organized and cleaning up the icons, sorting stuff into a folder structure, but a few weeks later, everything was a mess again. For the most part, I was able to do everything I really needed on Mac, but it was more difficult and time-consuming. Software I needed didn't run natively on Mac, requiring a vm and sometimes even that didn't work.

I tried mac back in 2012 until my macbook broke 2 years later. I'll never choose mac. I had to use a vm due to software not having mac compatibility. There is no folder structure so the screen was a mess of icons. I gave it every chance but mac just sucks. It is an inferior product requiring tons of work arounds to get basic stuff to work. I also hate the ui.

@keshavchan @soychotic Plus those who started on Mac and became bilingual (e.g. Win in the office, Mac at home or for side hustle); and similarly those who started on Windows and became bilingual.

@f4z6nxjqvx @soychotic I started on a Mac (1980s) and became “bilingual” on entering the workforce (late 1990s, initially a DOS-based system then Windows). In most places I’ve worked I’ve been an unofficial IT help.

@soychotic I've seen this first hand. My Mac colleagues can barely use a computer without assistance. Hell, kids straight out of college don't even understand what the C drive is. My generation started on DOS as kids, feels like we caught a huge break there.

@GrammarTable Although I’m inclined toward “the” in all cases, I chose “it depends” because I recognize a carve-out for entities that have names (or initialisms) in which the “The” is a conventional ingredient. An example of this usage is The Ohio State University.

@s_mark58760 @GrammarTable I'd look further and see how the Council uses it in a comparable context, i.e. body copy, not just in lists/headings/logo/letterhead. And going by their website, it appears they use lower case "the" in body copy. (Not that websites are always fully checked for style.)
