*Please note: When I discuss my own coping skills for dealing with unusual mental health experiences in the past, I am not making recommendations. There is some mention of stigma/misunderstanding, isolation and mistreatment, but nothing that should be too triggering to listen to.

You didn’t learn to hide by accident. Someone taught you—through anger, dismissal, or silence— that your voice was dangerous. But Maya Angelou was right: “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” Your voice is not the danger. Your silence is the wound.

The only thing that will stop boys growing up to abuse their partners is proper consequences for men who abuse their partners. Remember nearly all rapists get away with it, and 99% of abusive fathers are awarded contact with children. If you want to break cycles, start there.

Realistic trauma recovery means reminding ourselves, over & over (& over) again: people who don't know my full story or struggle don't have a valid opinion on what I "should" have done then, or what I "should" do or be like now.

Nobody prepares you for the amount of pain and grief you experience when you have to forgive yourself for believing someone was actually a genuine person. The hardest part isn't just their betrayal, it's the shame you carry for ignoring your instincts, for giving your best to someone who only mirrored what you wanted to see.
