I had gone to Bombay last year and as soon as I got out of the airport, a sudden blast of hot air combined with the stench of fish and garbage hit my nose. I grew up in Bombay and had never felt this disgusted before. I guess after living in Bangalore for so many years, I had gotten used to pleasant weather and the greenery. After getting out of the airport, I immediately saw two cab drivers fighting with each other over a parking spot. Fighting as if their life depended on it. Who knows, maybe it did. I went to all my favourite spots - ashok vada pav, shree’s frankie, shiv sagar, leopolds, marine drive, colaba and even drove on the sea link. I had hoped to go to chedda stores in matunga and almost cried when I saw that the building had been torn down. I was at C5 one day and I hurt my hand while getting off the blocks. I went to the medical store to get some bandage and an old uncle offered to call his daughter- a cardio surgeon at Hinduja hospital. I was very moved by the gesture. It was sweet how proud he was of her. I also rode the local- for old times sake. Witnessed a blood curling argument between the fisher women at CST, got squished between a 100 women soaked in sweat and exhaustion and vowed to never subject myself to this hell again. Running behind the local gave me such a high, I felt like I could do anything. I was there for 2 days and I must’ve showered about 8 times. Finally, it was time for me to go back. On my way to the airport, I was thanking myself for not living here anymore. Who could deal with the heat, the stench, the garbage, the dug up roads. I was better off living in a city where I can go out without getting drenched in sweat. But just as the flight took off, I felt a tug in my heart and a knot in my throat. I felt like I was leaving family. It was as if the heat of the city had melted my heart that had hardened from the AC offices and techbro playboys of Bangalore That’s what Bombay does to you, it makes you fall so deeply in love with it that you consider accepting all its flaws just to spend more time with it. If Bangalore is like a non fictional, motivational book, Bombay is like that fictional novel that tears you apart. The city has a soul that it shakes you so hard until you finally feel alive.

If we do not realise the game plan now, BJP will quietly remove each one of us from the list, add dummy Brazilians in our place, cast votes on their behalf and keep winning elections forever.
