Many of you will have noticed that last year, the UK leg of “Songs the World Will Never Hear” raised over £100K for Medecins Sans Frontieres, by giving away the proceeds of hundreds of VIP seats. @SoledadFrancis I read lots, and I write books for a living. I still can't get my 12-year-old daughter to read for pleasure. It's not so simple. She's very imaginative, articulate, intelligent. It's not just about screens. She'll spend hours crafting and drawing but reading, not so much.

Children don't read because their parents don't read. We'll soon be led by an entire generation that has never cracked open a book. Not a single book in the home. This frightens me more than the idea of nuclear threat or a foreign power attacking us. We're imploding from within.

My little girl and I watched the new Melania movie today. While watching, my daughter fixed her posture and started sitting up straight. She commented on Melania’s outfits, and after we finished, she went to put on her dress and nice shoes. I realized the messaging we send to children matters. The influence we have over them is far greater than we think. We need to normalize young ladies acting like young ladies again, and little boys acting like gentlemen. Formaldehyde is formaldehyde and your body makes more of it every day than any vaccine ever could. Dose matters. Source doesn’t. This fear isn’t harmless. It shapes public policy. It blocks innovation. It raises food prices. It slows down cancer treatments. Chemophobia is now mainstream and it’s costing lives. Scientists aren’t losing because we’re wrong. We’re losing because fear spreads faster than facts. Because influencers sell fear for clicks. Because lawyers monetize doubt. And because scientists are too tired to fight back. So here’s my message, as a chemist and as a citizen: Learn how toxicology works. Call out chemical fear-mongering. Support policies based on evidence, not emotion. Chemistry isn’t the enemy. It’s the reason you have clean water, safe food, and modern medicine. If we let fear win, we lose all of it.

We had an audience full of teachers last night and it was one of the best crowds we ever had. Teachers don’t get enough. Can we make today “thank a teacher” day?
