Kenya is turning forest ambition into action. At #ZambaHeritage, Dr. Ng’oriareng P. Clement (Kenya Forest Service) highlighted progress on the 15 Billion Trees Initiative, major restoration gains, new PPP concessions, and Kenya’s leadership in AfCFTA-ready forest value chains.

At the Congress in Nairobi, Dr Subhra Bhattacharjee, FSC Director General, reminded us that Africa’s forests are a global public good and protecting them requires African leadership, rights based commitments to communities and Indigenous Peoples, and finance that works.

The Government of Kenya, through my Ministry continues to strengthen partnerships and execute bold actions that secure our forests, support livelihoods and confront the climate crisis with the urgency it demands. Across the continent, we are uniting with our African brothers and sisters to advance sustainable forest management, scale up landscape restoration and build green economies that deliver real prosperity for our people. I am honoured to officially open the Zamba Initiative Congress here at the JW Marriott Hotel, Nairobi. Gathered here are honourable delegates, distinguished guests and global partners, all committed to one mission: advancing sustainable forestry and climate resilience. I extend my deepest gratitude to the Forest Stewardship Council, both its Africa and global leadership, for convening this vital forum and for driving bold, transformative action across our continent’s forest sector. Kenya is not waiting. Under our national #15billiontrees growing programme, we have set ambitious, measurable targets that honour our global, regional and national commitments on environmental sustainability. We have backed ambition with policy: clear frameworks to increase forest and tree cover in line with the AFR100 Initiative on forest landscape restoration. In 2021, we operationalised Kenya’s FSC Interim Standard, a critical tool for certifying forest management and supply chains for forest products. Today, the Kenya Forest Service has already designated four forest blocks around the Aberdare Range, covering approximately 65,000 hectares, to pilot certification. Kenya now leads Eastern Africa in Chain of Custody certification, with twelve businesses already certified.
