The young have typically tended to vote on the left, seeing it as a vote against the status quo and the establishment, before gradually moving to the right as they got older. But things are changing. In France’s latest elections, Marine Le Pen won more youth votes than the left, while Donald Trump’s youth vote in the last US election was a third higher than in 2020. Should these new rebels be listened to as a challenge to a failed establishment? Or does this signal a breakdown of the traditional left–right divide? Join House of Lords member Thangam Debonnaire, Reform UK politician Matt Goodwin, critical theorist Louisa Munch, and politics professor Eric Kaufmann in Hay-on-Wye this Spring to debate what this shift means for the future of left-right politics. The Prime Minister has slammed Irish rap trio Kneecap’s views as "completely intolerable" after the High Court found a member will not face a terror trial. Sir Keir Starmer said the CPS will be reviewing the judgment regarding Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, who was accused of displaying a Hezbollah flag during a gig in 2024.

Ofgem says 140 new data centres seek connection to the grid, which would require 50 gigawatts of capacity at peak time. Britain’s recent peak demand, total country usage: 45 gigawatts. Given that these centres alone would use more electricity than the entire UK currently consumes, we need a step change in producing more power. We presently show no sign of doing so, and indeed we hit an all time low in energy production in Q3 2025. These things don’t add up - and it’s especially glaring as it’s government driving the AI “revolution” - but doesn’t seem to realise that it’s failing to provide the power for its own vision.
