APPLY NOW: Fully funded regional training on the application of machine learning and deep learning in mountain cryosphere studies 💻 Are you a graduate student, early-career researcher, or government professional working on mountain environments? ICIMOD, in collaboration with the College of Natural Resources, Royal University of Bhutan, invites applications for a fully funded regional training on the application of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) in mountain cryosphere studies. This hands-on programme will equip participants with: 🔹 Foundational understanding of ML and DL models 🔹 Practical experience using open cryosphere datasets 🔹 Training on data preparation, model development, and applications through Google Earth Engine (GEE) and Python Application Programming Interface (API) 🔹 Exposure to advanced techniques such as convolutional neural networks (CNN) and vision transformer models The training aims to foster collaboration, innovation, and interdisciplinary research on cryosphere science across the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region. Dates: 1-6 December 2025 Deadline: 24 October 2025 Details here: icimod.org/event/cryosphe… Apply here: icimod.org/announcement/c…

Cryosphere science is male-dominated globally, with gender inequality especially stark in the Hindu Kush Himalaya. Since 2011, ICIMOD has worked to change this. In 2024, the first all-women cryosphere expedition, HKH Women on Ice, brought nine researchers from Bhutan, China, India, Nepal, and Pakistan together for hands-on field training. Guided by experts including IPCC author Miriam Jackson and ICIMOD’s Finu Shrestha, participants learned to maintain weather stations, collect glacier data, and assess glacial lakes. This milestone marks a step toward building a regional network of women cryosphere scientists. In a world where gender inequality persists, particularly in science, a group of nine aspiring glaciologists from the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region have embarked on ICIMOD's first-ever all-women cryosphere expedition to Ponkar Glacier in Manang, Nepal. Women on Ice is a crucial step in addressing the persistent gender imbalance in science, where only one-third of researchers are women, and even fewer in the cryosphere field. This initiative is not only about empowering individual women but also about inspiring more girls to pursue careers in science and breaking down the stereotypes that have traditionally excluded women from these fields. Hear from our first cohort of #HKHWomenOnIce: 🔹Aishwarya Sanas, India 🔹Silian Pan, China 🔹Mamata Aryal, Nepal 🔹Pema Eden, Bhutan 🔹Farhana Altaf, Pakistan 🔹Yinglan Jia, China 🔹Tuba Farooq, Pakistan 🔹Jeena Rai, Bhutan 🔹Yurika Sherpa, Nepal Follow their journey through this live blog as they shatter the "ice ceiling" and pave the way for future generations of female scientists in the HKH region: blog.icimod.org/cryosphere-wat… #Cryosphere #IYGP #Glaciers #SaveOurSnow #HKHWomenOnIce @arunbshrestha @Neera_S_P @fshrestha @aishwarya_721 @DrMiriamJackson @the_mimosa @chimis

Successfully completed the field expedition on Ponkar Glacier despite gusty winds. The #WOI learned debris covered glacier dynamics, lake formation processes, & melting patterns. Visited previously installed stakes on the debris & installed a new one, led by the #WOI participants

Done with 1st day on #ponkarglacier, our girls were curious, they learned abt features of glaciers, types of debris, formation of various lakes around glacier. We rushed back before strong wind storm takes over N reduces visibility. #HKHWomenonIce #SOS #Glaciers

15 km downstream, the GLOF flow is obstructed by a lateral moraine, and the GLOF enters a narrow channel. GLOF deposits are seen in the form of a fan. This flow obstruction may have reduced the overall GLOF energy. We earlier reported this in the paper sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
