@cmoreton99 @MrTimeform Sham of a company nowadays. William Hill himself will be turning in his grave. Was known as one of the most fearsome layers in the ring when he was alive.

William Hill's ante-post book for the 1979 Derby, showing liabilities for each horse. Only credit clients bets are shown and not the huge volume of betting the firm would accommodate on course and in their betting shops...

The last rites for horse racing are to be read by the Gambling Commission today. Soon to be gone but never forgotten. Over 200 years of tradition, needlessly sacrificed on the alter of ignorance.

As we wait for news from the Gambling Commission about Affordability Checks, we should re-state the idea of abolition. "One way of making sure that we get rid of such damaging regulations for good is to reassert the idea that we should trust the public." slotshawk.com/news/affordabi…

I’ve spent 25 years working in gambling, and even longer gambling myself. My experience has overwhelmingly been one of friendship, family, probability, emotional control, terrible accumulators, racecourse rituals and occasionally expensive fun. Reading modern gambling policy discussions, you’d think experiences like mine barely exist. So I wrote about it. “My Lived Experience of Gambling (Apparently It Doesn’t Count)”👇 Would love to hear yours open.substack.com/pub/vaughanlew…

@Jc198484 @VaughanLewis1 I do. They're empty apart from a handful of FOBT players, some of whom obviously have issues. I'm talking about sports bettors.

@fullgoracing @VaughanLewis1 Go in betting shops. I would say 85/90% of them are all problem gamblers. You only need to people watch for 10 mins to see it instantly.

@chrisgambler247 Just goes to show these checks haven't been thought through. I once tried explaining variance to the GC. Needless to say it fell on deaf ears like everything else that doesn't suit their agenda.

I wrote a paper 3 years ago explaining why affordability checks effect betting (horse racing in particular) far more than those who play online casinos. In recent years online casinos have grown rapidly and regulated online betting turnover has collapsed. sharpbetting.co.uk/articles/types…

New: The Gambling Black Market: what we showed at CMS and what the regulator said next. 100,000+ suspicious domains targeting UK customers. ~300 removed by the GC. $7.5bn estimated revenue from a single offshore operator. £16.6bn staked on the black market. 77% of consumers oppose affordability checks. The data is clear. Full piece here 👇 open.substack.com/pub/vaughanlew…

@chrisgambler247 Should be a punters and a bookies representative on the GC board too. At the moment it appears to be made up of anti's with an agenda.

Thursday could be the beginning of the end. That's when the GC meet to decide whether they will implement affordability checks. The general consensus is that they will. Horse racing will die, exchange liquidity will dry up, and it will be impossible to place a decent sized bet.

Everyone. And I do mean everyone in the industry, in the punting community, is telling the gambling commission they have got it fundamentally wrong As well as a number of experienced and influential lawyers in the industry say it is futile But the gambling commission presses on? What personal ambition drives such folly?
