@fawwon1 @JoePorter1990 Proper racecourse. Got stitched up by the council.

@cmoreton99 @MrTimeform Sham of a company nowadays. William Hill himself will be turning in his grave. Was known as one of the most fearsome layers in the ring when he was alive.

@chrisgambler247 Since when have the GC been growing the gambling industry, or have I read that wrong?

The new £10m 'Gambling Harms Research UK Evidence Centre' seems to drawn some conclusions before the research has even started.

@JonBryanPoker Abolishing the Gambling Commission would be a good start.
English

As we wait for news from the Gambling Commission about Affordability Checks, we should re-state the idea of abolition.
"One way of making sure that we get rid of such damaging regulations for good is to reassert the idea that we should trust the public."

@chrisgambler247 Looks like a wanted poster for the death of horse racing.

@Jc198484 @VaughanLewis1 I obviously go in the wrong betting shops.
English

@fullgoracing @VaughanLewis1 There is loads in any betting shop i go, betting horses blind every race, running up to catch a race as they go in shop i could go on and on

I’ve spent 25 years working in gambling, and even longer gambling myself.
My experience has overwhelmingly been one of friendship, family, probability, emotional control, terrible accumulators, racecourse rituals and occasionally expensive fun.
Reading modern gambling policy discussions, you’d think experiences like mine barely exist.
So I wrote about it.

Would love to hear yours

@Jc198484 @VaughanLewis1 I do. They're empty apart from a handful of FOBT players, some of whom obviously have issues. I'm talking about sports bettors.
English

@fullgoracing @VaughanLewis1 Go in betting shops. I would say 85/90% of them are all problem gamblers. You only need to people watch for 10 mins to see it instantly.
English

@BarstewardsThe Come tomorrow, gone are the days when you can a get a decent bet on full stop if the GC get their way.
English

Gone are the days you could get a decent ante post bet on one of the most competitive older horse handicaps of the year.

Apparently trying to get on more than £23 ante post for the Hunt Cup at a price is hard in 2026

@chrisgambler247 Just goes to show these checks haven't been thought through. I once tried explaining variance to the GC. Needless to say it fell on deaf ears like everything else that doesn't suit their agenda.
English

I wrote a paper 3 years ago explaining why affordability checks effect betting (horse racing in particular) far more than those who play online casinos.
In recent years online casinos have grown rapidly and regulated online betting turnover has collapsed.

@VaughanLewis1 The GC will ignore all of it. Doesn't suit their agenda.

New: The Gambling Black Market: what we showed at CMS and what the regulator said next.
100,000+ suspicious domains targeting UK customers. ~300 removed by the GC. $7.5bn estimated revenue from a single offshore operator. £16.6bn staked on the black market. 77% of consumers oppose affordability checks.
The data is clear. Full piece here 👇

@chrisgambler247 Should be a punters and a bookies representative on the GC board too. At the moment it appears to be made up of anti's with an agenda.

'When the Gambling Commission on Thursday asks its board of commissioners to approve the formal introduction of affordability checks, those commissioners should think carefully about sanctioning a system that is set to have disastrous consequences.'

@geoffbanksbet Noses in the trough. Simple as that. Doubt if they'd give a flying f*** about problem gamblers if you took that away.
English

Everyone. And I do mean everyone in the industry, in the punting community, is telling the gambling commission they have got it fundamentally wrong
As well as a number of experienced and influential lawyers in the industry say it is futile
But the gambling commission presses on? What personal ambition drives such folly?
English

@fullgoracing We are where we are but it looks like things are coming to a head now.

🚨 'Bookmakers threaten legal challenge to affordability checks that could mean one in five regular punters are asked for financial documents'
Hope this spells it out loud and clear - affordability checks are not welcome by punters, bookmakers or racing.
