Metal is an incredible template metaprogramming library. Its implementation is a bit surprising at first.

In "The Mathematical Universe", Max Tegmark states that all theories have two components: mathematical equations and "baggage", words that explain how they are connected to what we humans understand. In the case of Ulysses, the baggage is at least infinite.

Also, if the sudden phrase "Algy calls it . . . mother?" doesn't make sense, it'd be sufficient to know that Algy is Algernon Charles Swinburne, a Victorian poet whose attitude to the sea is questioned by the speaker.

My dictionaries fail to explain words from Ulysses
