Today I found out that Claude and ChatGPT couldn't find news about report happening in Japan that I KNEW happened. Claude even hinted that i was lying. I was scrathing my head, until I asked Claude to search in Japanese. And suddenly it found all the news reports including news report in English that it couldn't find before. There are filters that are put, that somehow only work in English, as soon as you search in another language, most but not all those filters are bypassed. @grok found everything directly without issue both japanese news and english version while I asked in English. So I asked Claude how did they differ in how they search and it was quite eye opening : Claude: - Search request goes to a third-party provider (not Google) - That provider has its own index, built primarily around English content - Results filtered through content classifiers, also primarily English - Fetch tool has a hardcoded allowlist — can only visit pre-approved domains anything outside is invisible - Can't follow redirects or access anything outside that list even via direct URL Grok: - Directly fetches any URL you give it, no allowlist - Uses a broader, less restricted index likely connected to X/Twitter's infrastructure - No domain restrictions — if the site exists and is accessible, Grok can read it - Content filtering appears less aggressive, especially for non-English content One sentence each: Claude: A filtered, English-centric search hitting a restricted index through an approved domain list. Grok: A direct web fetcher that goes where you point it with minimal restrictions. The fundamental difference is Claude is working inside a walled garden. Grok is closer to just using the internet.
