One of my favorite walking memories was in Kampala, Uganda. On my first day I planned to walk the 12 miles from city center to the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine outside of town. I made it about eight miles before I realized it wasn't going to happen, because of heat, rain, pollution, traffic, road conditions, etc. I was exhausted, wet, dirty, and close to broken. So I hoped on a boda-boda (hack motorcycle) for the rest of the way, feeling like a bit of a hero for having made it that far, in such tough conditions. Patting myself on the back. After mass I noticed a crowd of families, still in their church finest, camping in the compound, many with infants and piles of burlap & cloth sacks jammed with clothes, food, and pots/pans. After speaking to them I realized they'd walked over five hundred miles from central Congo, to come to the church, on a pilgrimage. Soon they would walk back. Any feeling I'd had of having been a hero completely evaporated.

There is a hotel in the southern United States that employs a man whose official job title is Duckmaster. The position exists nowhere else in the world. Twice a day he puts on a red and gold uniform, takes the elevator up to the rooftop, and walks five ducks down to the lobby. They march across a red carpet to a marble fountain in front of the guests, then swim there until evening. The tradition started in 1933 when the hotel’s manager came back from a duck hunting trip with too much whiskey in him and dumped his live decoys in the lobby fountain as a prank. Guests loved it. A few years later, a former circus animal trainer working as a bellman at the hotel volunteered to look after the ducks and taught them to march. The hotel gave him the title of Duckmaster. He kept the job for 50 years. The ducks now live on the rooftop in a marble palace that cost the hotel $200,000 to build, with their own miniature replica of the hotel inside. The hotel’s French restaurant has refused to serve duck on the menu since 1981.

(She was later convicted of mortgage fraud, so there's that too.) Her replacement, Ivan Bates, ran on the Democratic ticket with a simple message: repeat violent offenders belong in prison. Maryland law already allowed five years with no parole for convicted felons caught carrying a gun, but Mosby never used it. Bates used it a lot. In just two years, his office sent more than 2K repeat violent offenders to prison, double his predecessor's TOTAL. The city paired that with a precision intervention program that identified the small number of people driving most of the violence, which led to 631 arrests (94% haven't reoffended). Police also seized 2,480 firearms last year alone, including hundreds of ghost guns, while maintaining a 64% homicide clearance rate. When shooters know they'll get caught and actually prosecuted, behavior changes. Sandtown-Winchester, once the most violent neighborhoods in the city, just went a year without a killing! Carjackings (-51%) and robberies (-24%) are also down. Baltimore didn't change demographics, or its culture, its rules, or much of anything else in those years. It simply voted in a new Democratic prosecutor, who decided the city needed to finally put violent criminals in prison.
