as #India embarks on the world's largest election, what shd the incoming govt do to make #India a #science powerhouse? my opinion in today's @the_hindu with 5 specific suggestions, incl 🔼r&d budget, to make this happen & to enable ease of doing science in the country.

a mojor threat to #science in #India comes from the practicing scientists themselves. no one undermines science more than our scientists.

@IndiaExplained @NMenonRao excellent essay on why #India needs originality in #science & #tech to be counted at global stage except quite a bit is devoted to what #thiel thinks of india. a naturalized citizen & a right-wing conservative libertarian venture capitalist that thiel is - he speaks like he shd.

@OdedRechavi abslutely. i keep telling this to folks in #India. all faculty in indian univ/inst (exceptions a v v handful ones w tenure sys) have permanent jobs. there is no need to chase these glam journals. @mbeisen has been telling this for ever but alas, it is falling on deaf ears.

Do we grow wiser as we age? Can we? I spent over 15 years chasing glam journals and wasted a lot of time and energy (and this chase caused a lot of frustration to my team and co-authors). I don’t want to wake up at 70 and realize my life went into convincing a few editors my work was trendy enough. Enough is enough. I'll try to be smarter.

@hyderabaddoctor why #private #medical colleges at all, one may ask? why not increase govt medical colleges + seats w better/improved infra in the existing ones? two sectors, #healthcare and #education, where public expenditure & quality must exceed those provided by the pvt ones.

1.3 crore for a MD Dermatology seat? No wonder there were no takers. Cost of medical education has to come down. This could have a cascading effect on reduction in cost of medical treatment too.
Sruthy Susan Ullas@SruthySUllasTOI

783 PG medical seats are lying vacant in Karnataka. Unlike previous years, this time there are seats in derma, gen medicine, radiodiagnosis, gynaec, ortho and respiratory medicine that have found no takers. Most of them are high fee category. @S_PrakashPatil @NMC_IND @VCRguhs

The gold standard for research is that ~3 secret people will implicitly adjudicate truth and gate what science sees the light of day upon reading work the moment it drops (when instead, rigor and quality is substantively determined upon further testing over time). Many will claim the way to fix it is to pay these same people… or expand the pool from which these few people are sourced. Can’t wait for this totally bullshit system of scientific journal peer review to die, even if for orthogonal technological and operational factors

Look inside a "Made in India" satellite. GPS receiver? Chinese. Optics? European. Thrusters? French. Solar cells? German. Onboard computer? Imported. What's Indian? The bus structure. Sometimes. So, the label is technically accurate but strategically misleading. 🧵👇

I was telling a relative of mine (who sent his child to study at KIIT, Bhubaneswar) about the research of my cousin who studies at IISER, Mohali. He immediately said, “No one knows what IISER is. KIIT is better and more popular than IISER.” 🤦🏼‍♂️

Spent the last 3 months in India. Talked to founders, engineers, executives across multiple cities. Daily life here is ahead of the US in ways I didn't expect. 1/ Payments that actually work Everyone pays with UPI. Street food, auto rides, everything. No cards, no Venmo delays, no "does this place take Apple Pay." It just works. Everywhere. 2/ Quick commerce is real I order groceries and they show up in 10 minutes. Actually 10 minutes. Now when I'm back in the US waiting 45 minutes for delivery, it's annoying. 3/ AI adoption without the hand-wringing In the Bay Area, there's much more discussion around doomsday scenarios with AGI. In India, people just use it - students, business owners, filmmakers. The conversation is "how to embrace it" vs "should I be worried." 4/ An AI ecosystem is being built from scratch Companies like Sarvam are building foundational AI for India. Funds like Activate VC are backing AI-native startups early. This isn't India catching up. It's India building its own version of the AI stack. 5/ The ambition shifted Five years ago, the goal was building a successful Indian company. Now it's building a global company headquartered in India. 6/ GCCs are everywhere India used to be viewed as an "offshore" setup. That's completely changed. GCCs (global capability centers) are strong engineering and R&D centers by global companies. Name a global company and they likely have a presence here - Amazon, Salesforce, NVIDIA, OpenAI, Anthropic, etc. That said, infrastructure has gaps, regulation is complex, but the slope matters more than current state. Very bullish on India and it would do a lot of good for the US to partner much more with India.

@joshiamitabhevo @KesariDhwaj never met anyone during my ~20yrs stay in 3 continents who was not proud of his/her/their nation. loving one's nation is not peculiar to one nation but a universal exp. those spewing nationalism through their shrill voice in tv & writings are ignorant at least, imbeciles at most.

@KesariDhwaj Well, the biochemist is quite prolific on all kinds of topics on social media but I am yet to see even a glimmer of cogency in his takes. Not a particularly great biochemist either, by the way.
