In the age of AI, making medical students memorize huge chunks of information is a sheer waste of time. An average Indian medical student spends very little time interacting with patients. The majority of their time goes into memorizing facts. What is the value of remembering classifications, staging systems, and treatment algorithms when all of this information can be made available with a single click? Pattern recognition for diagnosis and the development of softer skills can improve only through meaningful patient interaction. The entrance examinations that students care about should also undergo a fundamental change. Imagine a system where students are assessed on long-term patient follow-ups, or where they are given dummy cases, possibly virtual, and their clinical approach is tested. That would be far more relevant and far more interesting. The current system is obsolete!
