Merritt Water Meters
1. I just got back from spending time away from Merritt to receive semi-threatening letters from the City, and some American Firm called Neptune Technology stating that I must allow the installation of a water meter. From my understanding, the City has always had the right to install a meter at the City's water shut-off valve just at my property line. If the city continues to proceed with this very aggressive action against its own citizens, I would strongly suggest they consult their legal counsel, as I know numerous Merritt citizens who plan to take Legal actions against the City for its aggressive actions against their rights.
2. Further checking with my neighbours and friends, I find some alarming situations that the city and this American firm are proposing.
a. That they are going to install these meters within my house(which violates my rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Endangers my house)
b. Are Local B.C. Certified plumbers being used to install these meters?
c. Are they bonded and insured?
3. How is my ongoing privacy and property going to be protected after this initial violation?
4. Is the City of Merritt responsible for any damage or theft now and in the Future?
5. Why did the city choose a Foreign company over the numerous Canadian companies?
6. As we ALL know, this is not about saving water; this is solely about garnering more revenue from the already heavily taxed Merritt citizens.
7. We are so fortunate to sit on top of one of BC’s largest aquifers, yet both the Provincial and City governments insist that we are seemingly in a perpetual DROUGHT. Well, they surreptitiously sell our water to any high bidder that comes along, denying the city's own citizens water to maintain a vibrant green city landscape.
8. Why did the City decide on installing Water Meters without holding a city Vote on the matter, as had been previously discussed in Council? That three million could have been used on much-needed flood prevention, which would have benefited everyone and penalized no one.
9. When the city's contract with Neptune Technology expires, can the city still collect the data from the Neptune Technology-installed meters, or are we held ransom by a quick, poorly researched decision?
10. In closing, it is very obvious that the City wants to increase the fee it collects for water and hopes that using the subtrifuge of Water Meters and Water Saving will cover the lack of proper Water System maintenance that has occurred for years, like the rest of Merritt’s infrastructure.
