The Neo-Confederate conspiracy is successfully taking over America. They want to kill me for telling you this.

I'm starting to think that the Great Recession was so bad and Occupy was so successful that people don't believe in the business cycle anymore, but a permanent recession.
Max@maxtmcc

Gen Z pessimism is so widespread and deep across the generation I really doubt it can be easily attributed to “colleges have too many amenities” or “rent is too expensive in NYC.” If that were the case, you would see obvious differences across demographics, which we don’t see!

@analytichegel Thank you for saying this! I’ve been making the argument about statutory and comprehensive benefits for full-time employees making the market for “work hours” imperfect since undergrad. happy to see someone else make the point.

If you could seamlessly sell those 45 minutes of cooking time at your marginal hourly rate, the calculus would flip for many people. But in reality, most jobs don't let you easily convert "I have 45 minutes free on Tuesday evening" into cash.

It's not totally crazy that the explicit cost of eating out is lower, but what is genuinely insane is that the marginal utility of cooking is higher for most people. That said, I have a pet explanation for what's going🧵
oecolamp@oecolamp

It's honestly a massive market failure if a person producing their own food at home can achieve a lower marginal cost than a competative market of firms solely dedicated to producing hot meals. Can't understand why you would support free markets if they can't even deliver lunch.

Every once in a while I workout pretty hard (weightlifting not cardio) and the next day I’m like entirely shot. Full and absolute exhaustion. Body feels like there is no amount of caffeine or nicotine that can save me. Happens like twice a year, is this diagnosable ?

@gasstationALE It pisses everyone off on both sides because all we can do is get pissed at each other since there's no one to represent us despite all these taxes. We could try calling our senators, but could they even hear us over the sound of all the raping and eating kids?

@gasstationALE Food has gotten substantially cheaper relative to incomes. Food prepared by *paid labor* has gotten more expensive. It is the labor that has gotten more expensive, not the food. Goolge "baumol's cost disease".

@gasstationALE Real food spend per capita is up 50-60% since 1960. It's just that PCE 3.5x'd over the same time. Price per calorie is also down, so it's simply a matter of people eating better, and yes, a lot more (nearly 3x) food-away-from-home vs 1960.

@JimbosJunkbox this is the wrong interpretation of the data but directionally correct. Food used to be really expensive so budget conscious preparation like eating at home was important, now its cheap so some savings are pocketed and some used on nicer food, restaurants, and delivery.

@_night_brain__ @PJ11819211 For real though it definitely changes your opinion of this stuff when you spend decent money as a regular at other local restaurants, and they come and spend money as regulars at your restaurant.

I don't get how someone couldn't be frightened off by the cost of delivery food, if you want restaurant food then why not just drive there?
