Each man thought: one of the others is bound to say something soon, some protest, and then I’ll murmur agreement, not actually say anything, I’m not as stupid as that, but definitely murmur very firmly, so that the others will be in no doubt that I thoroughly disapprove, because at a time like this it behooves all decent men to nearly stand up and be almost heard…
But no one said anything. The cowards, each man thought.

Sneakers (1992) got buried by a goofy title and clumsy marketing, but underneath it is a ridiculously well cast, sharply written caper with real wit and gorgeous early 90s craft. People are only now catching on to how good it always was.

@gavinaldrich Not in the UK, unless the adult is in a "position of trust" (i.e. certain professions like teacher, doctor, social worker, etc).

Aside from the specifics of the allegations against Russell Brand, stuff like this is why I think we ought to have a staggered age of consent – a 16 year old having sex with someone who's 17 or 18 is very different from having sex with someone who's 30!

@MatthewStadlen @MichaelRosenYes You're right. Starmer was in Mandelson’s group.
English

@MichaelRosenYes I don’t think Mandelson was in a Starmer group.

The Kodak Carousel scene in Mad Men. After that, it became our favorite series of all time. The way the snapshots unfolded in Don’s pitch had that emotional weight you don’t often see on TV. A masterpiece.

@implausibleblog A man driven to succeed: son of a toolmaker, human rights lawyer, DPP, knighted and yet somehow now a passenger in his own government, unaware of anything that matters.

Whatever happens today, don’t lose sight of the double standard
Shabana Mahmood and Keir Starmer pushed for the resignation of Craig Guildford over failures within his force—despite him acknowledging the errors and taking corrective action
Yet Keir Starmer does not apply that same standard to himself: not for mistakes made by his own team, nor for appointing Peter Mandelson despite longstanding concerns about his record
Labour promised to clean up politics after 14 years of Conservative cronyism. Instead, this looks uncomfortably similar - one rule for others, another for themselves
And to those arguing that leadership cannot change during a time of conflict: that’s precisely when standards matter most. In difficult moments, the country needs consistency, accountability, and integrity - not selective responsibility

@flying_rodent Why does the Prime Minister always end up being the passenger when he should have been the driver? Is this what the son of a tool maker who became a human rights lawyer become - a passenger?
