been thinking about this for a bit:
(long text post wrt/ my opinions on the state of reindustrialization in the El Segundo area.)
i reiterate: these are my opinions. they were formed from my experience living and working here - if something i write is contrary to your experiences, pls let me know - i like to learn new things generally
there’s a certain kind of person who strongly believes america needs to do better to industrialize. ostensibly i am one of them. however i dont fit in with this group, because so often this belief is comorbid with a lot of “chud” takes that i think ultimately hinder what they claim to be their highest priority. often i have seen marginalized people pushed out because of their identity - some of the brightest people i know, and some of the most capable - they are pushed out due to perceived differences in their opinions, their identity, and for characteristics deemed “woke”
last weekend there was a little get together between founders and investors (catfish bonfire iyk) -> they have these fairly regularly, and i’ve heard it’s an excellent opportunity to network, and introduce venture capital to some of the most intelligent and gifted people i know, to achieve things that would hugely benefit the country, that would be impossible otherwise. however, i’ve never been to this event. it seems like something that would be fun. i like talking to other engineers, learning what problems they face and how they solved them. but I’m also aware that i would not be welcome there.
i can be best characterized as “nonconforming” in a way that is relatively polarizing - and through my (albeit limited) interactions with these people have had my understanding been made clear that they do not like people like me. i have close friends who have had this experience as well, which i find strange. It’s strange because as long as i dont tell too much about myself, i can if i so choose, get along with the group well! We do have a lot on common!
More importantly, it’s strange to me because from a first principles standpoint, it is a silly handicap. I think industrialization is an optimization problem, it has enough variables that it would be impossible to find the “right” solution. The best solution we can achieve, right here, right now, is by making incremental steps. With that said, i don’t think picking (frankly pretty arbitrary) groups to ostracize is directionally correct. Which feels really silly to say. I feel like that should be obvious. If you have a room of 100,000 people, work your ass off to find the most capable 1000, and then throw out 10 for reasons orthogonal to their ability, you’re kneecapping everyone involved.
I’ve noticed with this group there is a large emphasis on merit, which i largely agree with. What i fail to see is how a group so aligned on both their goals and their methodology in which to achieve them promote a couture that actively reduces their talent pool. Sure. we dont agree on a lot. orthogonal to this, the culture and mindset of the “reindustrualize bro” is a barrier and a hindrance to american reindustrialization
wow that was long. and probably incomprehensible. but those are my thoughts.
