@TracesofTexas Saw Earl play in state high school championship game in Astrodome in 1973. Again in Rice Stadium in 1977 versus UH when he was on way to winning Heisman Trophy! Then several times with Oilers!

Traces of Texas@TracesofTexas·
Traces of Texas reader Sam Thurston kindly sent in this 1977 photo of Earl Campbell ripping the soul out of some poor SMU Mustang defender and just said "College football is 100 days away." Thank you, Sam ... that was a pleasant thought! As for Earl, I looked it up: he gained 213 yards in this game, which Texas won 15-6. 213 yards. If you look closely, you'll see snot flying.😄 As Hank Hill would say, he was a sight to behold, I tell you what. Did you ever see the Tyler Rose play live?

@BudsOilers Ken Houston also had 2 pick sixes that day! Unfortunately this was the last good win before the infamous back to back 1-13 seasons in 1972-73!

I’ve taken a few shots in the past @stephenasmith but I’ve always respected him. He knows that. He’s not a friend, but he’s in our business and he’s busted his ass to get where he is today. John Saunders (my bestie in Bristol)always thought well of him. 👍

@MatthewNichol5 I listened to Wilson’s first no-hitter against the Braves in 1967 on the radio. Struck out Hank Aaron for last out. Then again in 1969 when he pitched his second against the Reds after Jim Maloney no-hit Astros previous night. Great pitcher awful tragedy.

Let's take time to remember the tragic life of former Astros pitcher Don Wilson, who passed away on January 5, 1975, at the age of 29. Wilson died from carbon monoxide poison while he was passed out in his car with a blood alcohol level of 0.167%. Some ruled it a suicide. Wilson's son Alex was 5 years old and slept above the garage, and he also died. Wilson was a great pitcher who threw 2 no hitters and a 2 hit shutout in his last major league appearance. He won 104 games with a 3.15 era with a WAR of 27.7. He possibly could have been on track to the Baseball Hall of Fame. He appeared on a 1975 Topps Baseball card that was pressed before he passed. I was a child but loved baseball and never forgot this when I saw it on the news. Here is a clip of Wilson pitching in the 1971 All Star Game.

@baseballinpix 1969 Houston Astros staff that had 117 more, a then-record 1,221 by a staff for those who struggle with math. (L-R Don Wilson, Tom Griffin, Larry Dierker, Denny Lemaster -- 840 Ks in that quartet).

Main Street with Gulf Building, Downtown Houston (circa 1970) Traffic moves steadily along Main Street in downtown Houston. Cars and a city bus share the roadway. The Gulf Building rises in the background as a major landmark. Pedestrians walk along sidewalks near storefronts. Public transportation supported downtown movement. Businesses relied on steady foot and vehicle traffic. The street remains active during the workday. This scene reflects daily routines rather than special events. The mix of vehicles shows urban movement. The image captures the rhythm of city life. It preserves a typical downtown moment.

If you don’t have a big that can bang with Mo Krivas (most teams don’t) good luck trying to beat Arizona. The only two teams to do so: - Texas Tech — JT Toppin (All-American) - Kansas — Flory Bidunga (Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year)

@HistColFootball @ClintKPoppe Street took over in ‘68 and UT won the Natty the following season! Then Horns reeled off 4 more SWC titles and Cotton Bowls making it 6 straight! The streak was finally broken by the Baylor Bears and the Miracle on the Brazos team in 1974!

Texas Music lost one of its most unmistakable sounds with the passing of Augie Meyers. From Sir Douglas Quintet to Texas Tornados, that swirling Vox organ became part of the DNA of Texas. One note and you knew it was Augie. Rest easy, legend.

Eagles founding member Randy Meisner was born this day in 1946 Scottsbluff, NE. Meisner co-founded the Eagles in 1971 alongside Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and Bernie Leadon. He appeared on the band's first five studio albums, from their self-titled debut (1972) through Hotel California (1976). His most famous contribution is the 1975 hit "Take It to the Limit," which he co-wrote and sang lead on. The song’s climactic high notes became a staple of the band's live performances, though the pressure of hitting them night after night eventually contributed to his decision to leave the group in 1977. Other notable Eagles songs featuring Meisner on lead vocals include: "Tryin'" (from Eagles) "Certain Kind of Fool" (from Desperado) "Midnight Flyer" (from On the Border) "Too Many Hands" (from One of These Nights) "Try and Love Again" (from Hotel California) Meisner began his career in the early 1960s with a local band called The Drivin' Dynamics. In 1966, he moved to California with The Poor, a group that famously opened for the Jimi Hendrix Experience in New York City. In 1968, he became a founding member of Poco (initially called Pogo) alongside Richie Furay and Jim Messina. Although he played on their debut album, Pickin' Up the Pieces, he left the band before its release. He then joined Rick Nelson's Stone Canyon Band and worked as a session musician for artists like James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt, eventually forming the Eagles with fellow members of Ronstadt's backing band. Meisner passed away in Los Angeles on July 26, 2023, due to complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). What are your thoughts and memories of Randy Meisner?

Kellen Sampson made a point of mentioning to me today that Ramon Walker and Emanuel Sharp committed to UH via Zoom (due to COVID) and both stayed 5 years. They’re the last of the COVID kids … and perhaps the last of the five-years-in-one-program kids, too.
