@appfactory Awesome! Been waiting to see what you came up with. Are you still leveraging CRIU or did you go down a different path now that VMs are involved?

MachinenVM works on macOS (HVF) and Linux (KVM), and is written in Zig, with a TypeScript API and a CLI. It boots a debian machine in a few 100ms. I think it's at 200ms right now. You can control the entire machine via TypeScript. You can snapshot a machine on macOS, and restore it on Linux, and vice-versa. You can do live mounts from host-to-guest, or static mounts that produce a .img file, you can share ports... this is your microvm

@binsquares Maybe not a good idea.. but wondering wouldn’t CRIU inside the vm work for snap shooting what’s actually running and then spinning up inside another VM?

Memory snapshotting on firecracker is a legit speed hack for some applications But it's terrible for most workloads because now you have all this state from timers, sockets, cryptography, + more to account for after you resume. I recall a some team had a multiple day SEV2 because they needed to inject entropy for their crytopgrahic algorithms to work. (Used for auth, secure keys, etc) filesystem artifacts/"snapshotting" are way cleaner and gets you close to 90% of the speed up for way less ops overhead. this is why .smolmachines format doesn't bother with memory snapshotting by design

@binsquares Never owned one but it’s impressive how long they seem to last. With a battery change or two they seem to keep ticking

I still use a t480 running Linux for most of my work on smol machines 8 years and running like a champ still. I genuinely think it might outlive me, it's a tank

@binsquares Have been in both roles and gotta say I have a hard time imagining being an EM without having been an Engineer first. Being a non-technical EM has to be absolutely terrifying. I've seen engineers violate the lack of engineering knowledge to burn many cycles doing nothing.

Here's a my take about manager-engineer relationships in big tech: engineers actually have way more power over their managers than they think managers can't deliver/build as well as engineers. managers' career depend on engineers to deliver so they can take credit (note: there are nuances)

Had to mount to tmpfs because it seems something about the way redb maps into memory might be causing an issue? But still really cool!

@ibuildthecloud Oh this is why… the blue is gone and Sammy is too? I guess was too cute for a serious company going for an IPO? 😬

Just prompted @claudeai to create a trip with [real] flights to all the countries in the world for 2027 and add it as a trip to @tripsyapp with real flights. Is that useful? No. Is it fun? Absolutely! 🤓

With the baby I've been doing more AI work one-handed haha. It's nice to be able to kick off a bunch of threads on my phone and come back to them later on my computer. Deep research style tasks are my favorite. There are so many things I've been learning and scoping using it.

@sudomateo My guess… on surface seems more personal? But gotta wonder if it’s not also a strategy to tie one’s self very closely in people’s mind to build some sort of personal brand?
