Album of the night. It's unusual for me to post two albums in one day, but I've admittedly fallen down a Stevie Wonder rabbit hole tonight in honor of his 76th birthday, which is never a bad thing to fall into at any time. By 1972, Stevie reestablished himself as a serious album artist with the pioneering masterpieces Music of My Mind and Talking Book, in which he and singer-songwriter Syreeta Wright wrote heartfelt songs that chronicled the highs and lows of their past relationship, like “Love Having You Around,” “Blame It On the Sun,” and “Lookin’ For Another Pure Love.” It was also during this intensely prolific period that Wonder oversaw Syreeta's self-titled debut album. Released in the summer of 1972 on Motown’s subsidiary label, MoWest, Syreeta was a gorgeously supple, yet vulnerable song cycle that flaunted the sweet-voiced singer's far-reaching lyrical and topical prowess. Both Syreeta and Wonder concocted a heady psychedelic tapestry that drew from avant-pop, folk, jazz, funk, ambient, and orchestral influences to explore weighty meditations on black identity politics (“Black Maybe”), romantic disillusionment (“Baby Don’t You Let Me Lose This,” the dark soul blues epic "To Know You is to Love You," and “How Many Days”), and faithful pursuits of love (“Keep Him Like He Is” and the gospel-imbued, folky soul weeper "Happiness.") While this cult classic granted Syreeta critical acclaim, it went nowhere. Motown folded their MoWest subsidiary soon after, but kept Syreeta on their roster. This remains one of Motown's all-time great lost soul treasures, delivered at the highest level. Plus, prime-period Stevie is all over this one with the most brain-melting cover of The Beatles' "She's Leaving Home" I've ever heard.

@Raymond22389 @GeezusWalks @BlackMediaHub "They used to steal bikes as a hobby" is as retarded as a comment can get. I mean I see it as a father and son bonding. Maybe you didn't get have that and if so I'm sorry.

Album of the day. Best known for French designer, photographer, and illustrator Jean-Paul Goude's iconic cover art and the album's centerpiece single, the suggestive, white-hot funk groove "Pull Up to the Bumper," Grace Jones' seminal 1981 album, Nightclubbing distills all the essential aspects of the Jones aesthetic: sexy, mechanical, smoky, mysterious, and downright fearless. With this being her second collaboration with the core Compass Point team, Chris Blackwell and Alex Sadkin, their multi-faceted amalgamation of reggae, new wave, funk, and synth-pop is furthered, with some bold tricks along the way. The cover material Jones takes on are wildly diverse and tasteful, ranging from the likes of Sting, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Bill Withers, and others. But underneath it all, there's the groundbreaking production duo Sly & Robbie providing the musical backbone of this entire album, while Jones imbues their visceral grooves with the flair and attitude only she can pull off in the alluring way she does. An all-time classic example of how daring a pop album can be without being pretentious or off-putting.

No other musician can compare to Prince. Perhaps a peer could match him for an individual skill, whether it was as a singer or guitarist, but no individual could match him as a package.

@NevrEnufGuitar @iamslickrick01 You mean more instruments? Still doesnt make him "better". Stevie had a "Classic Period" started when he was 20. Prince does not ... although he's close.

@genxgenepool @iamslickrick01 Stevie can't match him either. At some point, the more questions you ask regarding skill level and versatility, the answers for Stevie will be "Nah, he can't do that." With Prince, nearly every genre & sub-genre is covered and his dexterity/virtuosity in studio/onstage unmatched.
