I was visiting my father in the hospital. He was undergoing heart surgery, a triple coronary bypass. Although he did not have a pig xenotransplant, there were other patients who did. And in the hospital waiting room, it is not private: You hear all of the other patients' family conversations. So yes, that is a thing, since at least 2015. For the cardiac bypass, they took a vein from my father's leg, and used it to supplant his heart. So he did not need to go on anti-rejection medication.

Afghanistan is not really dangerous to visit right now. Neither is Iraq. Both Afghanistan and Iraq have recovered fairly successfully from recent wars. You might want to take some caution in your flight planning, since there are active war zones all around. I would say, fly via Russia. Definitely avoid the airspace over Ukraine.
