My @USIP essay on Bangladesh's tumultuous transition: "Building democracy is a generational and iterative endeavor, but the interim govt will have succeeded if it can bend the curve of governance toward greater participation, pluralism and accountability." usip.org/publications/2…

Writing for the @AtlanticCouncil, @SteveCima, @james_storen & I examine the weakening state of political parties in South Asia and areas for reform. "Concentrating on internal democracy, data-driven strategies, and interparty consensus will right-track South Asia’s party systems"
Freedom and Prosperity Center@ACFPCenter

"Channeling the public’s demands into a methodical restoration of political and civic institutions is more likely to set the country on a path toward stability and continued economic growth. The United States can support this effort." @USIP

For those who want to see political reforms succeed in #Bangladesh, there is much to learn from the 2007-08 caretaker government period.
Jon Danilowicz@JonFDanilowicz

Some unsolicited advice for #Bangladesh’s interim government: “The 2007-08 government made a grave error by setting an arbitrary deadline for the end of the interregnum. Rather than focus on a flexible conditions-based timetable, that government announced its expiration date, with the encouragement of the international community. Once this happened, the response from the spoilers in the political class was preordained. They realized that leverage had been transferred from the government to the unreformed political class which knew it only had to pay lip service to demands for change.” saperspectives.net/elevator-speec…

🧵 Bangladesh’s Prothom Alo newspaper has a front-page story on the final moments of Hasina’s tenure. She insisted on using brute force until only 45 minutes before her departure; no amount of pleading from her aides and officials could persuade her to relent. 1/n

Over the past 6 years, the most consequential street movements in #Bangladesh have been policy-focused, nonpartisan & youth-led (road safety, anti-quota, anti-rape, others). The revival of the anti-quota movement and the gov't response are worth watching. en.prothomalo.com/bangladesh/d1m…
