The power of infinite: uniqueness of all structures Structures can look identical in size, shape and mass but they are all different even very slightly. This is the power of the infinite that is hard to grasp. From our perspective electrons do look like identical copies with the same mass/charge but there are no 2 perfectly identical electrons even in an infinite Universe containing an infinite number of electrons. On Earth, the sextillions of grains of sand can look similar from a distance, but we know they are all different in size and shape when looked at from a magnifying glass. From our telescopes the billions of galaxies and stars we can see look similar and behave in a very similar way together but we have enough understanding to know there are no 2 identical stars nor 2 identical galaxies. One day we'll have the same understanding about the structures populating the infinitely small that we can still only faintly detect.

@AstronomyVibes Most of those anomalies are caused by tired light. Light, like all waves, is not an eternal phenomenon. It gets tired and slows down, causing redshift in all the galaxies we observe. This effect is added to the redshift caused by those that are moving away from us.

@PhysInHistory From our very limited perspective, yes. But every electrons are different. There are an infinite number of different electrons / galaxy / sand grain in the Universe. This is the power of an infinite Universe. There are no 2 identical structure / particule / motion / stuff.

Electrons are so identical that if you swap one electron with another anywhere in the universe, nothing changes—they are fundamentally indistinguishable. This led physicist John Wheeler to propose the mind-bending idea that all electrons might actually be the same single electron, traveling back and forth through time to appear everywhere at once.

@elonmusk What about a goldfish let alone in his fish tank? He can't see humans and could think we don't exist. We are too insignificant, like an ant is to us or there is a long term purpose to them avoiding us. I'm sure they're so advanced that any sighting is on purpose.

Where are the aliens? This is one of the most fundamental questions.

@PhysInHistory Water has (is) waves and is made of molecules (particules) of H2O. The analogy is really perfect and simple. Light is the wave phenomenom of aether (whatever you want to call it nowadays) and is obviously made of some kind of particules that we'll eventually call photons.

Newton thought light was particles, Huygens thought waves – they were both right and wrong; centuries later, quantum mechanics showed light is both.
