The Office for Budget Responsibility has hardwired austerity into British fiscal policymaking. It is an independent institution with too much power and too little democratic scrutiny. It must go. My new report @NEF suggests what should replace it Thread ⬇️

I love how Keynes is unapologetically hates businessmen, capitalism, its morality, injustice and just says it directly. Without any nonsense talk. He was very ethical and moral thinking. And his economic theory, really, appears from his moral values more than everythinf

Today we show solidarity in the workplace with the horrendous situation in Gaza. Thousands of Palestinians - mainly women and children - have been killed by Israeli military operations and many more are injured. We need an immediate and permanent ceasefire, an end to the humanitarian crisis and respect for international law.

The government is raising employer national insurance contributions to boost public services. The Low Pay Commission published evidence that most employers absorb higher costs without impacts on pay growth. Protections like the National Living Wage increase and new worker rights will help shield employees. ✅ Revenues raised will deliver urgently needed public service gains that will benefit us all.

Today's budget is a vital first step towards the growth, jobs and living standards working people desperately need. The Chancellor was dealt a terrible hand by the Conservatives – economic chaos, falling living standards and broken public services. But with today’s budget she has acted decisively to deliver an economy that works for working people. Tax rises will ensure much-needed funds for our NHS, schools and the rest of our crumbling public services, with those who have the broadest shoulders paying a fairer share. The Chancellor was right to prioritise hospitals and classrooms over private jets. There is still a lot more work to do to clean up 14 years of Tory mess and economic decline – including better supporting and strengthening our social security system. But this budget sets us on an urgently needed path towards national renewal.

Last year I was commissioned by the UK ministry of housing to write a report on the demand side-drivers of the housing affordability crisis. After some election-related delays, here it is. (1/13) ucl.ac.uk/bartlett/publi…

.@MGSchmelzer second book 'the hegemony of growth' is brilliant and important. The cover and the title alone have already sold me on this newly issued translation of his first book.

The government's employment rights bill is a big deal. From overhauling unfair dismissal protection, to getting zero hours workers onto secure contracts, to enabling unions to recruit in new workplaces, it could shake up employment relations.
