My first first author paper is out!!! How climate change impacts European Benthic biodiversity. Key finding: responses are diverse, calcifying organisms are likely to suffer in future seas, while fleshy algae shows resilience. RTs would be amazing! frontiersin.org/article/10.338…

@lewis_goodall What weakness? The whole week has been journalistic franzy. I know you guys are obsessed with drama, but in the real world... people like Starmer just get on with it...

@lewis_goodall Seeing the media saying that Trump has stepped back on using force to take Greenland is maddening. Have we not learnt that Trump will pivot on almost anything. Europe needs to start treating the US like an enemy, and stop letting US decide what type of fight this will be...

I wouldn’t get too excited about the Trump line on force in Greenland. He’s been spooked by the markets and possibly by US public opinion. It’ll be the line until it’s not where he’ll hint at it again. Which might be later today.

@campbellclaret It is the highest insult, to the UK, to be treated by its 'partner' like this. For nearly 100 years, the UK has stood by the US whenever called upon, often at great cost, be it politically, financially, or in lives of its citizens. The US keeps spitting in our faces...

This has to be the over reach moment when Europe stops pretending this guy is normal or can be dealt with normally, and they get their act together and fight back. He is an enemy over Ukraine and an enemy over a NATO country, Denmark, whose defence of Greenland has been weakened not by them but by the USA. He is a narcissist who cares only for himself and his fellow grifters and cultists, and his deeply fragile ego. He is a bully who will respect nobody and nothing that fails to stand up to him. I have many American friends and am deeply sorry it has got to this but while he is leader it is not a place we can support in any way. And given the chaos he is causing home and abroad it might be about time his NBF at @FIFAcom Infantino thought about shifting the World Cup to a country that wants people to feel welcome. 🇬🇧 🇩🇪 🇫🇷 🇮🇹 among the many who could step in. But for now he just needs to be told DO ONE DONNY
Kate from Kharkiv@BohuslavskaKate

Trump imposes tariffs on European countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Finland) over Greenland. This is getting ridiculous!

@TheNewsAgents @maitlis @jonsopel @lewis_goodall A hereditary monarchy is built on the idea that the Royal Family is inherently better than us. The Andrew drama shows they are not. The UK is already a functional Republic, why not take the extra step? And be done this nonsense? Tourism will survive!

@LiamGThompson1 E Watching the Tories implode, after years of terrible choices (like Brexit which was meant to strengthen them) has been very cataract. No party deserves to exist on its own. They all need to earn votes. I hope the rest of the main parties take note.

@TheNewsAgents @maitlis @jonsopel @lewis_goodall People on the left are so obsessed with tearing themselves apart. Starmer is the first Labour PM in a generation. No he is not perfect, but find me a politician who is?!? The guy is a mark above the last 3 PMs we had... Andy Burnham needs to chill out

I have already arrived in Washington, tomorrow I am meeting with President Trump. Tomorrow we are also speaking with European leaders. I am grateful to @POTUS for the invitation. We all share a strong desire to end this war quickly and reliably. And peace must be lasting. Not like it was years ago, when Ukraine was forced to give up Crimea and part of our East—part of Donbas—and Putin simply used it as a springboard for a new attack. Or when Ukraine was given so called “security guarantees” in 1994, but they didn't work. Of course, Crimea should not have been given up then, just as Ukrainians did not give up Kyiv, Odesa, or Kharkiv after 2022. Ukrainians are fighting for their land, for their independence. Now, our soldiers have successes in Donetsk and Sumy regions. I am confident that we will defend Ukraine, effectively guarantee security, and that our people will always be grateful to President Trump, everyone in America, and every partner and ally for their support and invaluable assistance. Russia must end this war, which it itself started. And I hope that our joint strength with America, with our European friends, will force Russia into a real peace. Thank you!

@campbellclaret How many times has Trump said this term that two sides need to 'make a deal'. It's just a catchphrase at this point. He never actually means it.

There are two breaking news whooshes that are becoming really tiresome. 1. “Trump takes questions from reporters” (when does he not?) And more significantly 2. “Trump says the two sides should make a deal.” He talks a good game at getting these deals made but so far …. ????

Labour and the Tories need each other to pull themselves together.   Starmer failing to tackle illegal migration will lead to a Reform Government, not a Tory one. Likewise, Reform damages Labour by promising fantasy policies Minister are pressured to adopt.   Both mainstream parties now need each other to succeed more than they might like to admit.

@lewis_goodall I completely agree with you. Too often the pension generation is prioritised over those younger. Young people always have to pay the price to the old. Frankly, they had their whole lives to plan for retirement, if they cannot afford it that's their problem...

The most disturbing thing about the winter fuel debacle is the chilling effect it'll have on any government which tries to think rationally about pensioner benefits and intergenerational fairness. We really are in the Nanny State now. Writing from me. open.substack.com/pub/goodalland…

For too long, Britain has been addicted to cheap overseas labour — while 1 in 8 of our own young people aren’t in education, employment or training. I'm putting our young people first, investing in skills they need and ending our dependence on foreign labour.

@RoryStewartUK The Penguin jokes speak to a wider point. Trump's team put tariffs in places without clear knowledge about them. E.g. French overseas territories with different rates to the EU. They clearly do not know about the world economy in the detail needed for their jobs...
