Propaganda trumps sensible governance. WHITE LION: A Worthy Lesson To Power Holders On 18th April 2024,Nigeria’s anti graft agency the EFCC officially declared the former governor of Kogi State Mr.Yahaya Adoza Bello (a.k.a. White Lion) wanted. Notices of EFCC’s declaration are littered cyberspace and beyond. EFCC’s action was masterminded by his contemptuous refusals to honour their invitations and failed attempt to arrest the “fugitive of justice” in his Abuja residence on Wednesday 17th April 2024. EFCC’s inability to nip-bud a fearsome character that called himself White Lion was largely attributed to disruption of their operation by his conspiratorial successor and his troop of thugs and official security operatives. For eight straight years,the cowardly White Lion replicated Mobutu Sese Seko Ngbendu wa za banga lifestyle— meaning “the all-powerful warrior who,because of his endurance and inflexible will to win, goes from conquest to conquest, leaving fire in his wake”. Or the sociopathic cum sadisitc mentalities of leaders of nazis and fascists of inter wars period in Europe. In the first place,his unabashed rascalism,kleptocratic gangsterism, and social corrosiveness earned him the nickname name White Lion. When echoes of the meaningless phrase oozed into his ears,his shoulders usually protruded to the high skies and ears enlarged like those of an elephant.Even Enfant Terrible of Russian Empire,Iron Joe of USSR,and Hitler of Germany weren’t deadly like the White Lion of Okene. The pseudo White Lion and other accidental and incidental products of history that got power in Nigeria must accept some impeccable variables of power:its intoxicates;its transient; there is always accountability; and the end of despotic power holders is always tragically apocalyptic. Throughout ancient, medieval and contemporary histories,no dictator ended well—yet,people like the White Lion wouldn’t draw lessons from their catastrophic ends: Hitler committed suicide; Gaddafi was annihilated on the street like a common criminal;Amin shamelessly fled Uganda and died in Saudi;Mongestu of Ethiopia and Mobutu of Dr.Congo left their countries abruptly and joined their ancestors while in exiles; Mussolini was assassinated;Batista was toppled by Castro brothers;and Mubarak and Al-Bashir were dethroned by protesters.The list of autocratic rulers that vacated power tragically is quite lengthy. I salute the tough stance of President Ahmed Tinubu and the never-say-die disposition of EFCC in this case.It’s giving the war against hyper corruption a positive public perception—especially in this instance that a juggernaut of the ruling party and its former presidential aspirant is in the eye of tumultuous legal and political storms.
