@ajmnsaus @jonobri yep, while housing supply is definitely a big factor making melb cheaper, it’s not necessarily the CBD density. sydney has been building as much, at times more, density than melbourne across the city. the big supply difference here comes from sprawling at twice sydney’s rate.

@jonobri Gosh, no, that's so not true. Sydney has built an insane amount of units in the last 15 years outside the city: Rhodes, Zetland, Mascot, Chatswood, Parramatta, Hornsby, Waitara, and so many more of these mini CBDs. It's all new development.

Melbourne's phenomenal CBD buildout, and consistently stronger volume of housing supply ever since, likely does explain why our city is much less expensive than Sydney, yes.

@ImproveMass All-day off-peak some V-line routes are as good as 20min freq, Syd intercity is at 30m-1h freq, & Gold Coast line is 30 min. Those regional trains can get down to sub-10 minutely during peak in some cases!

@ImproveMass Not only urban/suburban networks — in Melb, Syd, and Bris’ cases, those regional rail lines radiating out beyond your screenshots still run at pretty decent frequencies with all their service patterns.

If only US cities outside the Northeast (and Chicago) had urban rail networks like Australian ones. Perth is almost the exact same population and density as Houston but has an 8 line urban rail network carying double the riders of the MBTA Commuter Rail

@MatthewBoldist1 Naturally, newer technology is nicer, but can’t fault syd for starting on it early. The marginal improvement is probably not worth replacing them for a while longer.

Funny part of learning about various fire truck makers is that within a millisecond I can tell if it’s not an American truck, because it doesn’t look like it’s from 1995. Anyway here is a Swiss turntable that, compared to a standard US ladder sets up faster, fits in tighter spaces, can articulate around obstacles, is cheaper, and lets you design safer city streets.
