This was the obituary The Economist published for Mao in 1976 - at the height of the Cold War. Show this text to any Economist "journalists" today - without telling them it's from their own paper - and they'd reply: surely it's "CCP propaganda" 😏 Yes, incredible as it may sound, there used to be a time when Western journalists could assess a geopolitical rival honestly and respectfully without being accused of being a traitor. And this honesty was in no small part a key factor why the West won the Cold War. Today we call honest assessment "propaganda," and we harass, smear, and blacklist people for it. And we're puzzled why the West is in steep decline. Truth matters.

Kaja Kallas who - I kid you not - is supposed to be the EU's top diplomat, just described China as a "disease," specifically "cancer." 🤦‍♂️ Just as the entire rest of the world - including Trump's US - are deciding to re-engage with China, the EU prefers to insult them. Why would China be "cancer"? Because, in Kallas' own description, their companies are more competitive and this forces what she describes as a binary choice for the EU: "morphine" - subsidize EU companies - or "chemo", become more hostile to Chinese companies. Or maybe, just maybe, it's not binary, and if there's any cancer eating away at Europe's future, it's precisely Kallas' mindset - the reflex to call "disease" what is simply someone else doing a better job.

Since gaining independence in 1991, Ukraine has lost nearly half its population. Back then, the country had 52 million people. Today, even the most optimistic estimates put the figure at around 25 million — and the decline is accelerating. Almost half the population are pensioners, the birth rate is catastrophically low, and the war continues to claim lives while driving away those who simply want to live. In 2025 alone, Ukraine recorded just around 170 thousand births but 485 thousand deaths — nearly three times more people died than were born. Add to that roughly 300,000 official emigrants (with the real number likely significantly higher), and Ukraine is losing over 600,000 people per year on conservative estimates. At this rate, in just ten years the population could fall below 20 million. Every third Ukrainian student no longer sees a future in their own country. These are catastrophic figures. War has made Ukraine a place where life and a hopeful future feel increasingly impossible. Yet somehow, the war lobby continues to enjoy excellent funding.

Mai 2026) 💬 Wir sehen, dass die Europäer inzwischen aufgewacht sind und aufgehört haben, von der Notwendigkeit zu sprechen, Russland auf dem Schlachtfeld eine „strategische Niederlage“ zuzufügen oder einen vollständigen Sieg der Ukraine anzustreben. Plötzlich betonen sie nun, dass sie früher oder später mit Russland sprechen müssen. Gleichzeitig fügen sie jedoch hinzu, dass zwar Gespräche notwendig sind, aber sie – die Europäer – selbst bestimmen würden, worüber und wann gesprochen wird. Solche Aussagen kann ich kaum ernst nehmen. 💬 Präsident Wladimir Putin stellte die Europäer auf eine Probe ihrer politischen Reife und ihres politischen Feingefühls, als er am 9. Die Diskussion nahm teils recht kuriose Züge an. Manche erklärten sogar, Schröder sei für Moskau möglicherweise akzeptabel, müsse jedoch unter einer Art „Aufsicht“ stehen. Dabei wurde unter anderem Frank-Walter Steinmeier, der amtierende Bundespräsident Deutschlands, erwähnt. 💬 Ich möchte daran erinnern, dass im Februar 2014 zwischen dem damaligen Präsidenten der Ukraine Wiktor Janukowitsch und der Opposition ein Friedensabkommen geschlossen wurde. Es sah vorgezogene Wahlen und eine politische Lösung der Maidan-Krise vor und wurde von Frankreich, Deutschland und Polen garantiert. Für Deutschland unterzeichnete dieses Abkommen damals Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Bereits am nächsten Morgen brach die Opposition die Vereinbarung, ignorierte sämtliche Garantien und besetzte Regierungsgebäude. 💬 Wir wandten uns daraufhin umgehend an Berlin, Paris und Warschau und erklärten: „Liebe Freunde, Sie haben diese Vereinbarung garantiert – bringen Sie die Opposition, die unter Ihrem Einfluss steht, zur Vernunft.“ Die Reaktionen blieben ausweichend. Man erklärte, Demokratie nehme manchmal „unerwartete Wendungen“ an. 💬 Deshalb wissen wir bereits, inwieweit man Herrn Steinmeier vertrauen kann. Die europäische „Erfolgsbilanz“ im Hinblick auf Verlässlichkeit und Verhandlungsfähigkeit fällt vollständig negativ aus. Es gab Möglichkeiten, konstruktiv zur Lösung der Ukraine-Krise beizutragen.
