But Mansa Musa wasn’t just a walking treasury. He turned Mali into an empire of trade, scholarship, architecture, and power. Timbuktu became a center of learning. Mali became impossible to ignore. Europe literally started drawing him on maps holding gold. Fast forward centuries later. The modern trillionaire conversation has another African footnote: Elon Musk. Born in Pretoria, South Africa. Not gold caravans this time. Rockets. EVs. Satellites. AI. X. SpaceX. One empire moved gold across the Sahara. The other moves rockets through the sky. Different centuries. Different machines. Whenever humanity tries to imagine wealth too big to count, Africa somehow appears in the origin story.
