Your median professor sits so far left that AOC, Sanders, and Warren would count as moderates in any faculty lounge. Faculty from 55 elite universities form one towering blue spike of ideology far out on the left, density exploding past 6, with virtually nothing on the conservative side. This was built through decades of selective hiring, social enforcement, and the systematic purge of dissent. And because they credential the people who run media, law, government, and tech, the monoculture leaks into every elite institution downstream.

I’ll explain this like you’re five: People who spend decades researching complicated problems sometimes change their minds based on evidence. That’s called learning. If most experts in a field reach similar conclusions, your first question shouldn’t be, “Why are they all left-wing?” It should be, “What do they know that I don’t?” This really isn’t the flex you think it is.

@MomKrill @kol5hara To make it a fair comparison given the discussion: I would probably buy the same gift for a friend with a career who is 40+ as I would for a friend who is 23 and careerless. Most people just don’t think about this stuff that hard and don’t worry about others’ choices this much.

And it's also true that if you prioritized your career and have your own money people won't treat your baby shower the same way. Not because they dislike you or anything negative, but because they're assuming you can afford to buy things yourself that younger, less established couples can't. Like I love my best friend who is a career girly, but I never stressed about her not getting everything on her registry like I did for my cousin in law who's husband died during her pregnancy and suddenly she was dealing with being a single mom on half the income. I don't think that's mean of me, it's just recognizing that older, richer couples need less help.

never once seen career women put down stay at home moms/trad wives but for some reason all the trad wives have something to say about the career women who ARE having babies and make GOOD money. yes you can do both. Don’t be jealous now. God keep me away from friends like this!!

Probably going to get hate for this, but I have similar feelings towards baby registries for couples who waited a long time to have a baby as I do for wedding registries for couples who have been cohabitating for years. I'm still going to get you something and I am happy you are having a baby, but you are 40 year old lawyer and pharmacist with a $3000 stroller on your registry; I just don't have the same sense of urgency as for the registry for the 28 year old HS teacher and basketball coach who had to pay for fertility treatments

Like obviously you would want to take care of your cousin in that scenario - any reasonable person would

@kkrespawned Exactly this. Also, if no-one buys an item off the registry, usually the registry site gives the couple 10-20% off the item if they buy it themselves. So some people “pad” the registry with things they know won’t get bought so they can buy them later at a discount.

Re. baby registry discourse: I find it odd and self-centered that the lower income friend thinks they are expected to buy the $3,000 stroller they can’t afford, instead of this expecting person’s friends and family who are in the more privileged income bracket and can afford it

I'm sorry, but this is the most ridiculous shit ever. Race swapping Chani has killed all immersion in Dune. Arrakis and the Fremen were never written as a melting pot. Frank Herbert gave them clear ethnic logic. Changing Chani’s heritage breaks the story, the Fremen culture, and internal world consistency. You destroyed that world when you chose tokenism over storytelling. Dune deserved a better adaptation.

“I pay off my credit card balance in full every month” is a top 5 financial lie told. Visa/Mastercard/AMEX would literally go out of business if this was the case for the majority. In addition it would hurt your credit score to not keep at least a small balance on your cards
