Playing around with Claude AI. Wrote this nice interactive nonlinear double-pendulum simulation in about twenty minutes with a few back-and-forth iterations with the AI. Pretty damn cool.

@naomirwolf It was a perfectly valid and quite normal question. Ignore the haters and keep being curious.

‘Call me ill-informed, I was an English major, but - what is the light source here?’ I reposted my question. Lots of people are having a good laugh, and you are welcome to, but I am not ashamed to ask very basic questions about fields not my own, of other people online; and I prefer to have human conversations with knowledgeable people rather than ask AI or Google websites as a first resort. I put this question badly in haste I concede but I meant: please explain where the astronauts are in space in relation to this image, where is the sun in relation to this image, where is the earth in relation to this image, what time of day or night it is on earth in relation to this image, and what is the relationship of our day or night on earth to this light on the far side of the moon. Curiosity isn’t always well put and wasn’t in this case but I think it’s always a useful quality.

Hikaru Nakamura appreciation post. He is getting way too much disrespect right now. I know he has always had haters because of how directly he speaks and because of some of his actions over the years. But I also think qualifying for the Candidates through those Mickey Mouse events rubbed a lot of chess fans the wrong way, and he is paying the price for that now. Honestly, I think if he had played Grand Swiss and a few more serious classical events in 2025, he would have come into this tournament in much better shape. I also think part of the issue is motivation. It feels like he wanted to play the Candidates mainly because it gave him a path to the World Championship, not because he loves classical chess at this point. And when you already seem half-detached from classical, it is very hard to show up to the toughest event in the world and perform at your best. Because he is having a bad event, everything he says is now being judged through the lens of losing. My feed is full of criticism. When Hikaru criticized the anti-cheating measures, I think he had a point. When he criticized his own team for missing 12...0-0, I think he had a point there, too. But once a player is losing, people stop listening to the argument and start attacking the person. That is exactly what is happening here. I am not even a big Hikaru fan. But people should remember who he is. He is a legendary player. His online chess over the last 20 years is unmatched. In classical chess, he crossed 2800 twice. Only 16 players in history have ever reached that level, and not all of them made it back after dropping below it. Hikaru did. Around 2020, when he became more of a streamer, a lot of people stopped taking him seriously as a top player. Then he came back in 2022 and proved again that he is exceptional. And beyond that, his work as a streamer has been huge for chess. He brought a massive number of new people into the game. He has also consistently brought attention to issues inside the chess world and forced conversations that others would rather avoid. You do not have to like Hikaru. I am not saying that. But the amount of disrespect he gets is absurd. He is one of the most important chess figures of his era.

I hate woke nonsense as much as the next centrist dad but this is a guy signing lyrics to a song and giving a sense of the vibe. I do not see the problem with this (at all). Don’t be shitty to deaf people.
Ryan Gerritsen🇨🇦🇳🇱@ryangerritsen

Instead of deaf people just watching the actual artists perform, CBC puts a sign language interpreter on to perform air guitar & drum solos for them to watch along side of it. Whats going on in Canada? It’s a 24/7 nut house

These statements inherently damage YC’s reputation because either (a) Garry has incredibly poor judgement, which affects the companies chosen and mentored; (b) He is just BSing and knows it, which means YC is not trustable; (c) He is correct, then WHAT ARE ALL THE COMPANIES FOR? x.com/garrytan/statu…

@FischerKing64 They don't have separate titles. There are common titles for everyone like GM and IM and then other titles only reserved for women, like WGM.

Some people point out that open tournaments don’t have separate sections, and women do play in them. What I should have said is that at the highest level - like national championships - the players are all men and so they have separate championships for women. They also have separate titles for women etc.

It’s interesting that chess - which doesn’t require any physical prowess - has distinct sections for men and women. Chess organizers allow women to play in open tournaments against men, but they mostly don’t because they would get wiped out.
J.K. Rowling@jk_rowling

Today's ruling by the IOC means a welcome return to fair sport for women and girls, but I'll never forget the scandal of Paris 2024, when people who consider themselves supremely virtuous and progressive publicly cheered on men punching women.

Winter Olympic medal counts are misleading as they are not per capita. The normalized medal count of a country is: (# medals) x (Pop of Norway)/(Pop of country) Here is a normalized medal count for the leading top 15 countries. Yes, you can have < 1 normalized medals!

The number of pushups won’t matter until you change how you see yourself. If you see yourself as a lazy person, you’ll always quit. If you start to change who you are, and become someone who trains and doesn’t give up, that’s what matters. Identity change requires action. It’s the proof for your mind that you are someone different than it thinks right now. So start small. Prove to yourself that you’re someone who does 10 pushups and 10 squats right when you wake up every day. You can grow from there, but first we have to change who you think you are.

I don't mind the eval bar as long as the commentators don't see it. Strong GM going through their thought process aloud is what gives it incredible value. Once they see the eval bar, it is not a genuine experience. Especially if I see the bar and the critical line and they don't, how they break the position down and eventually arrive at that line is the best part.
