😆 Did I? Nobody got paid at step 6? If you believe that, I can’t help you.
And let’s not limit it to the playing budget.
Did Haringey Borough provide the pitch for free? And then Tilbury? And then Bowers?
And who paid for the marketing? The recording equipment, cameras and microphones? The merchandise? Coaching staff. Medical staff. Stewarding. Software, hardware. Training facilities. Kit. Equipment. Transport. Catering.
I could go on.
If you think anyone in the Eastern Counties Division One South had a bigger club budget than Hashtag United did in 2018, I’m afraid you’re mistaken. In fact, I’d be pretty confident in arguing that point all the way up to around 2023/2024.
And good for them too. Dream big. Why not?
But don’t then patronise the non league community by saying things like ‘Football's governance is lacking’ and ‘the finances are unsustainable at every level’ and ‘football has been sold to the highest bidder’ and ‘football is broken’.
You broke it!
Hashtag inflated the market time and time again, to the detriment of every other club, up and down the pyramid. So spare me the pity.
There was no marketing campaign or budget?
I’m calling bullsh?t.

Absolutely pathetic.
Opening statement says there was no budget that drew people in. I watched you play Step 6 football with players capable of playing step 3/4, blasting teams for fun and making a mockery of clubs that have been establised for over 100 years.
Promotion after promotion, all as a result of having more cash than anyone else and turning non league footballers into martyrs, pimping themselves out to the highest bidder. And now you talk about not being able to compete with clubs on a budget.
There are hundreds of clubs up and down the country, many with years and years of history, and crucially, an actual home ground. But they are repeatedly shunned for the sake of £50 and the chance to play football in someone else's home ground.
And until the FA do something about all of the "new" clubs flocking into non league football with just a wide eyed owner and a YouTube handle, with no ground, no following, no history and no proper plan for sustainability, we will keep seeing it happen over and over and over again.
Zero sympathy from me. Sorry.

🫵 Join the Chats Community Hour
Following the success of the past two weeks, we’re proud to be out in the community every Thursday giving something back where it matters most.
Players, club staff, Academy students and volunteers are coming together to make a positive difference across our town — and we want you to be part of it.
This week, a big thank you to Arriva for joining us and supporting the initiative. Together we’re tackling real community challenges — from litter picking and street clean-ups to projects that help improve local spaces for everyone.
So far, the Chats Community Hour has made an impact across Kitchener Avenue, the White Road Estate, Bournville Avenue, Palmerston Park and Magpie Hall Road — and we’re only just getting started.
Whether you’re looking to get active, give something back, or represent your business in a positive way, come and join us on a Thursday.
The more people involved, the bigger the difference we can make together.
Contact us: community@chathamtownfc.com
Where should we visit next? Let us know.
