How do we build a culture from below, one that resists erasure and insists on possibility even in despair? Researcher Ghida Ismail (@Ghida234) takes us inside Beirut’s Zico House and the Sisyphean labor necessary for Lebanon’s cultural survival. raseef22.net/english/articl…

Despite GDP showing progress in #Palestine before the Gaza #war, the daily realities of its people tell a different story. Our blog explores what these indicators miss and why they need re-evaluation. bit.ly/4c2LG2j

I wrote a blog post on how current development indicators fail to accurately depict the reality in Palestine. I highlight the need to reevaluate how development is measured to help Palestinians secure their rights and freedoms. @GlobaldevB @GDNint

@mars_valdivia and I wrote a chapter on how internal mobility exacerbated the health and socioeconomic effects of the pandemic and what mechanisms drove differentiated impacts between migrant and local workers 12 cities worldwide.

There were some really nasty, hateful people at the pro-Israel rally. Check it out.

@Starcourse @LHSummers the killing of more than 8000 civilians including more than 3000 children by Israel is just unfortunate collateral damage? It is not a murderous act? Is it because being killed by Israeli bombs makes your death less relevant? Or is it that Palestinian lives are less valuable?

@LHSummers “This is a false equivalence between the actions of a murderous terrorist organization & a sovereign state's right to defend its citizens, which unfortunately results in the loss of innocent Palestinian lives.” Indeed.

This powerful letter is in my view right. I am very disappointed in the response of most leading American universities, including Harvard, to the events of October 7th. Any university with an anti-bullying policy needs to consider what has gone on. The Association of University Heads in Israel to the Universities in America and Europe en.huji.ac.il/news/associati…

Has anyone written a good piece about how the left seems to be using the word “genocide” to mean “civilians who died in war while looking the same”?

@YannaiGonch Also saying “not even mentioning that Hamas was democratically elected by Gaza” assumes that Gaza is a normally functioning “country” and overlooks that Gaza has been occupied by Israel since before Hamas. I dont think there is anything democratic here.

@YannaiGonch 1) “from the river to the sea” calls for equal rights and justice for Palestinians, for a solution that ensures the dignity and freedom of Palestinians and Israelis from the river to the sea, to end apartheid and occupation. It does not invoke a “genocide”.

Pro-Israel gatherings in universities (all that I've seen): - mourning the murdered and calling for the return of the abducted - NOT calling for any violence - condemning Hamas terrorism, NOT even mentioning that Hamas was democratically elected in Gaza Anti-Israel gatherings in many universities: - calling for violence ("Intifada", e.g., yesterday at MIT) - calling for genocide ("From the river to the sea", e.g., yesterday at MIT) - chanting against the US ("Hey hey, ho ho, the United States has got to go", e.g., yesterday at Harvard)
Elee Shimshoni@EleeShimshoni

Today @MIT. Make no mistake, “from the river to the sea” is a call for genocide. How are Israeli/Jewish students, staff, and faculty supposed to feel safe on campus? Alongside hate, this rally used the ignorant participants to spread lies also unbecoming of an elite institution.

@YannaiGonch Your inability to condemn the genocide of Palestinians by Israel makes me question your morality and your integrity as a faculty member.

@YannaiGonch It is disappointing that faculty, like yourself and others, that should be better informed about the history and context of the conflict and should work for more justice and human rights for all, are just busy undermining the morality of students.

@YannaiGonch 2) speaking of “genocide”, can you please acknowledge “genocide” against which people is happening now? I think now more than 4000 Palestinians civilians were killed by Israelis in the last 2 weeks.
