@GenghisConnThr3 My favorite thing about the discourse surrounding the ZX games is the cope about them being “metroidvanias” as some weird attempt to gaslight outsiders into trying them out.

@V_E_R_G Emil’s comment in that one conference about players making paper airplanes when he’s trying to write “the great American novel” lives on

@GMango99 I completely forgot how horrifically awful Wii Sports Club’s pricing was. No wonder I didn’t mess with it at all during the Wii U days.

@Critical_Scribe I think Nynaeve from the Wheel of Time is a good western example of this. Not just in her affections for Lan but also in her protectiveness towards the other Emond’s Fielders. Oh and I’m obviously referring to the books and not the cringe cancer that is the Amazon show

The concept of “gap moe” is lost on a lot of writers in the west. The sudden shift in someone’s demeanor that reveals another side to them is a great form of emotional titillation that serves as a huge hook for the reader. It’s why a tsundere blushing makes men interested. It’s also why a usually cold blooded man cracking a sincere smile makes women’s hearts go aflutter. To go beyond just that attraction, an effective use of Contrast lets you create greater depth for your characters with minimal “effort”. Rather than a full on flashback to show why something is important to someone, showing them touching an object and smiling in a different way than they normally do creates that mystery and also creates a new layer to the character that the reader/viewer gets intrigued by. You can add so much with a single sentence placed effectively at the right time, and it can serve as a sudden jolt to keep the reader not only interested, but now even further invested in the tale. I won’t say that Eastern works do this consistently, but they do it much more often than Western works at the moment and that’s why people get so invested in the works in the long run. Currently, the mainstream West conflates loud with emotions, and as such they don’t really have room for contrast due to everything being exaggerated or explosive all the time. Its why the general audience often thinks stoic characters are emotionless and “aren’t actually characters”, because our mainstream writers don’t use the contrast or “gap moe” to give brief glimpses of their humanity effectively. You’re either hot or cold, and that’s not very good for long term writing.

What people often fail to understand, including a lot of writers is just because a woman character is tough, doesn't mean she doesn't ever want to dress pretty or be called pretty. It's part of the appeal, they don't have to always be punching the MC in the arm, I hate dresses mode to be strong. A tough strong merc character who never wears makeup, showing up in a dress to a ball and trying to hide her embarrassment and enjoyment of being complimented by the MC will always be PEAK. She can then punch him in the arm.

That MLS “we’ll take it from here” ad campaign is so funny. I don’t even think there’s an MLS diehard who seriously believes the interest for the sport in the US will last more than a second after the final whistle blows in the WC final.

While on one hand I'm down with clowning on live action remake slop, the fact remains that the Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon remakes made loads of money so I don't see that trend disappearing anytime soon.
