Vannacci era l’addetto militare italiano a Mosca quando Putin ammassava le forze armate sul confine ucraino. Secondo quanto racconta l’allora ambasciatore italiano in Russia, Giorgio Starace, a febbraio 2022 due volte interpellò il generale Vannacci per capire cosa stesse succedendo: pochi giorni prima dell’invasione russa dell’Ucraina e subito dopo l’invasione. Prima che i carri armati di Putin varcassero i confini ucraini, Vannacci disse all’ambasciatore italiano di stare tranquillo: non ci sarebbe stato “un conflitto di vaste proporzioni”. Quando, pochi giorni dopo, Putin annunciò “l’operazione speciale” e la colonna di carri armati russi si mise in marcia verso Kyiv, Starace convocò una riunione d’emergenza per conoscere di nuovo il parere dell’esperto: “Il generale Vannacci usa un’espressione colorita: i russi entrano in Ucraina ‘come un coltello nel burro’ e in un paio di settimane avranno raggiunto Kiev e ottenuto la capitolazione di Zelensky”. Questo per dire che il generale capisce poco in generale, ma è soprattutto nella sua materia che non capisce niente.
