@dieworkwear Don't forget how Simmel and Bourdieu taught us how poor people started wearing suits to imitate the rich people, which lead the rich away from suits because the poors discovered them.

"Poor people across the world have never worn suits." Not true. Here are some examples: — Members of Hip Sing Tong, a Chinese-American gang during the early 20th century. The were involved in a famous gang war against the Four Brothers and On Leong Tong for control of Chicago. — Mexican migrant laborers arriving by train in California to harvest beets. The United States has long relied on their labor for agriculture, even as the government denies them rights and, when convenient, labels them as "enemies" for political purposes. — Italian guest workers in Switzerland during the 1950s. There was a huge anti-immigrant backlash against them in the 1960s. — Sapeurs (men) and sapeuses (women) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These people hold working-class jobs, such as driving taxis and maintaining gardens, but spend their off-hours dressing up. Photographer Tariq Zaidi has a book about them titled Sapeurs. The suit, in fact, started as a working-class garment. It was the uniform of clerks and administrators who sat a few rungs below doctors, lawyers, and members of Parliament (who wore a more formal garment called the frock coat). Historian Peter K. Andersson has a book titled The Dandy: A People's History of Sartorial Splendour. It's about how working-class people have used tailoring to fashion themselves and create new identities outside of those imposed on them by socio-economic circumstances. You may enjoy reading it.

In Pardubice, Czech Republic, a group of pro-Palestinian activists from an unknown organization called Earthquake Faction set fire to a manufacturing facility belonging to L.P.P., a company that produces drones for Ukraine. The activists claim that this is a “production site for Israeli weapons,” which is, of course, nonsense. LPP signed a memorandum years ago with the Israeli company Elbit Systems to manufacture drones in the event that the Czech Army ordered them. Which did not happen. Given that no one knows anything about the Earthquake Faction, their website was launched this week, the company manufactured primarily for Ukraine, and Russia has a history of several terrorist attacks, acts of sabotage, and attempted ones, in Czechia, I can’t help but say that this seems suspicious to me, to say the least. In any case, I hope the perpetrators are caught, whether they are pro-Palestinian activists or Russians, and that they are charged and sentenced to a long prison term for a terrorist attack. The secret services are already looking into the case.

The idea of 5 senses is so wrong. We have at least 14. sight hearing taste smell touch temperature hunger/satiety thirst thoughts - you can tell what you are thinking proprioception - position of your body nociception - damage detection muscle fatigue - tired muscles and lactic acid buildup acceleration - via the inner ear, used for balance CO2 - your lungs detect carbon dioxide directly to make you breathe A likely more I haven't even thought of.

No shirt will make you feel cool on an extremely hot day. However, some materials are better than others. Let's talk about them. 🧵

@dieworkwear See, tattoos come from a rich cultural history. In Victorian times, the ladys of the high Society had their bodies separated into parts for public and private life, with the latter often being decorated by tattoos... 🧵 friendsofdalnavert.ca/blog/victorian…

People who whinge about "respectability" in appearance often don't know that the bespoke tailors they revere have tattoos. For instance, Fred Nieddu (one of my tailors) and Karl Matthews (who worked at Anderson & Sheppard before opening a tattoo shop called Blood Brothers)

if someone wants to wear tailored clothing but is afraid of looking too conservative or Establishment, an easy solution is to get tattoos. but this requires conviction in one's aesthetics.

@dieworkwear Those are good outfits obviously, but it's hard to shake their association with a certain conservatism, simply because of how the language of clothing works, as you've often pointed out.

Linen suits can also be divided into separates. See how this cream linen suit from The Armoury can be worn as a suit. The jacket can also be worn with jeans, while the pants can be worn with a different jacket. (Note this is easier to do with some linen fabrics than others.)

The easiest color for this is anything in the family of tan, cream, or brown (all casual colors). If that feels too classic for you, try a more modern color like navy or grey (linen will make it casual enough). Just note that dark linens can spot or get shiny with time.

@dieworkwear You often talk about learning the grammar of a certain style. But how does one do that without extensive preexisting knowledge about craftsmanship, style, design, etc.
