Not many know but even Sachin Tendulkar had ambitions to play the 2015 ODI WC & he didn't give up on 2015 WC on his own. It was selectors communication to Sachin which made him retire in 2013, they told him that they wanted to move on. I don't think, road for Rohit Sharma will be any easy at all, he is already 39 & will be 40+ btw WC arrives & we all know why Ajit Agarkar sacked him from ODI captaincy despite his great records as captain & champion trophy victory as he wasn't sure if he will be even able to play that ODI WC, so they wanted a captain whose place for 2027 ODI WC is sure, so they went with Shubman Gill. Just 1 bad series in England or anywhere & that will be a good enough excuse for selectors to drop Rohit Sharma.
