I didn't plan to fall in love with this one, but alas, she had other plans.
Now she's gone to heaven and our hearts are heavy with (an irrational amount of) hurt.
Have been debating making this public, but she was a good dog. Like every other sane dog parent, I can unequivocally say she was the best dog, and she deserves the mention.
I know she's in heaven with our Paddy boy- who left us 4 yrs ago.
Knowing Bella she's at the front gate with Saint Peter, standing unflinching like a statue, guarding,
only glancing up once and a while with her giant deep amber eyes, just to let the angels know she won't get tired and she won't shirk her responsibility.
Bella was fierce, serious, loyal, uncompromising, meticulously tidy, fearless, relentless, gorgeous & composed.
A champion KerryBlue Terrier showdog who needed to be adopted from owners who could not care for her - I brought her home in 2011, pretending it was just for a few days, and she stayed 14 years.
Thinking a lot about why this hurts so much.
Am I indulging?
Is this nothing compared to many who die tragically every day?
Is this inappropriate to feel so heartbroken for a dog?
Frankly, yes to all three of those questions.
But there are reasons why we can't help grieving the loss of a dog or a horse or any creature that lives with us, works with us, comforts us.
They are:
Unfaltering loyalty.
Unconditional True love
Zero judgement, even of our worst days, and zero questioning of how poorly we may have handled those bad days.
They don't betray us-ever.
No contempt.
Their souls are clean.
Always instant forgiveness.
&
Always pure joy when they see you (whether you have been away a week, a day, or 5 minutes)
We can't match these things with most humans in our lives-so we grieve when our animals have to leave 😔
ALSO
We have to all try to be kinder and more gracious to our family, our neighbours & even strangers.
These creatures surely await us in heaven.
They have earned it -
even if we haven't.
