Eth 2.0 Merge will be like a 787 having its jet engines changed mid-flight with no one noticing if all goes well. Heard this analogy last night and am a fan.

@gio_eth @yugalabs If the community is big enough and they have use cases that need to scale then they can kickstart their own L2. It's about accruing value to their own token and community.

.@yugalabs launching their own chain for scaling Apes would have the same result as $BCH's fork. Detach an asset from #Ethereum's security and it loses the premium that comes with it. The obvious solution to scale and retain premium is to use an existing L2 or launch your own.

Why bother with insecure sidechains when Arbitrum AnyTrust chains, Optimism and eventually StarkNet & zksync L3s will be just as easy to deploy (especially the OR chains). We're getting close. Spinning up your own L1 inflates your token unnecessarily.
defiprime@defiprime

I think we'll see App chains blooming next couple of years. Most retail-focused dApps don't really need censorship resistance or decentralization at all, so why bother with L1/L2, etc when they can just spin up and run their own chain.

We're sorry for turning off the lights on Ethereum for a while. It seems abundantly clear that ApeCoin will need to migrate to its own chain in order to properly scale. We'd like to encourage the DAO to start thinking in this direction.

@dabit3 It’s all trade offs. You could but then you get into decisions about how decentralized does the base layer have to be. If the txn cost at rollup level vs your desire for the most trustless base layer are outweighed for the desire for predictably cheaper txns, then yea, you might

If we’re using rollups then why not just use a different chain altogether that is not limited to the constraints of the underlying L1, especially in the future when we’ll see more and more innovation happening?

the current gas prices are bearish as fuck for Ethereum and every person who even tries to argue otherwise makes me even more bearish on all of this shit, the level of mental gymnastics people go through to justify this shit is sickening

@dabit3 @CelestiaOrg Yes it will but the dynamics will be different. Almost all users are still on L1, where eventually L1 likely will be used by rollups, bots, and ultra high value txns, and users will be at the L2–& even L3–rollup level. Still early in even delivering L2 & migrating users there tho

@gio_eth Rollups to any L1 will still reflect the price of the underlying network, thinking approaches like what @CelestiaOrg is a better way

So people have been talking about how blockchain will be useful in supply chains somehow for like, 5 years or so. Is there much progress in this direction yet? Or is it still mostly vaporware so far

@scott_lew_is agree that monopolies are generally undesirable, but what specifically do you think is "really problematic for Ethereum"?

@scott_lew_is I question the financial incentives of the people who believe it is. Lido is far from decentralized, until recently has threatened client diversity, and issues fractionalized derivative ETH. All the shortcuts to claim first mover at expense of base layer security

@RAC Do both, but make some songs maximally accessible. Being permissionless is partly why Ethereum succeeds. People will still desire the NFT bc they are a fan. You make royalties via those trades. Everyone wins. Bottlenecking IP stunts creativity and distribution of the original
