We're back up. Mostly. We expect everything to be back to normal within a couple of days. You can check live updates on what's working now here: bitrefill.com/service Bitrefill was the target of a breach from a high-profile hacker group. As soon as our team realized an attack was ongoing, we took the website and app down, and since then we have been working 24/7 to get the site back up in a safe way, which we are now doing. We’ve gotten help from top cybersecurity experts, onchain analytics and law enforcement, to understand what happened and how. We have a pretty clear image of that (hello 🇰🇵) and will publish more information about what happened as soon as we have time to write it all up. TL;DR: User gift cards, store credits, KYC info are unharmed. Bitrefill took a hit, our customers did not. Again, thanks for your patience and your continued trust. We’ll be back to our full self shortly.

That said, I will never run @LukeDashjr’s version, but I remain puzzled about the reasons for the change, especially if OP_RETURN is unlikely to be used.

@giovantenne @Daddy_Ikari @DonnyCottonhill one of the least scalable parts of running a node is the UTXO set cache, which uses memory. most computers have far less memory than disk, and memory is orders of magnitude faster than disk. running out of memory causes swapping and massive slow down, wear-leveling SSDs etc.

Those who refuse to learn from history, are doomed to repeat it. Running p2p nodes, too decentralized and anonymous to stop, is what defends individual sovereignty. Self-watering down p2p systems won't help them stay robust, it's just a slippery slope. Arguing decentralization doesn't matter that much likewise. There are decades of empirical evidence, even hard won legal precedent that robustly prove otherwise. This may be the first time I've seen self-sovereignty p2p system's own proponents, loud in their self concern, try to weaken the system they care deeply about with well meaning but misguided zeal. Don't forget the road to hell, and centralization failure, is always paved with good intentions, well meaning but naive to real world game theory, bolstered by opinionated rejection or actual ignorance of all experience and history. Smart people are great at that, because they are clever and can construct real-time counter arguments, though unfortunately not adversarial thinking of real world effects and lacking experience to believe the real world correct weighting of those counter arguments are nominal, or inverted for counter intuitive reasons. Listen to history. Please.

@Daddy_Ikari @DonnyCottonhill op return is a red-herring. it's 4x more expensive and unlikely to be used. even if it were used that's less bad than inscription spam as it's prunable, and 4x smaller!

@LukeDashjr Even if you have a full node but use to a corrupted NPM-based wallet you are still at risk.

Now for the purely hypothetical: this is only one step away from also displaying the transaction to the recipient, tricking him into thinking he received it. The only thing standing in the way of this on the receiver end is if he is using his own full node! What happens on a Bitcoin standard, if 80% of the merchants aren't using full nodes and are tricked into accepting fake payments like this?

This is the root motivation behind most everything well-done in the world. Build for yourself first, so you can clearly gauge the quality, and you'll likely find others who share your sensibilities. This is the story of Rails and Omarchy alike.

I just installed Omakub from @dhh and realized how prehistoric my .dotfiles setup was. I've been using it for more than 10 years so it'll take a while to re-adapt my muscle memory to all the new default keymaps, but it's totally worth it♥️
