Study found frailty accelerates up to 9 years before dementia onset and is a key early marker. Frailty was linked to higher dementia risk even when measured years before dementia onset and may represent a target for prevention efforts. ja.ma/4hLFake

Yup, we are seeing between 1 in 4 & 1 in 7 older patients choosing a non operative route when BRAN approach used in #CGA based #POPS perioperative services across the UK @GeriSoc @CPOC_News (article about this approach/ impact on SDM/outcomes just accepted -will share soon!)

Interesting stats from @totallytigers at our Future Surgery conference #FS24 - 15% of patients don't proceed with surgery proposed. Shows importance of a robust shared decision making process.

Resistance training can be complicated. But the truth is, many approaches “work”: “All combinations of load, sets, and weekly frequency improved strength, muscle mass, and physical function compared to the non-exercising control group”. The best program is the one you can stick to. blogs.bmj.com/bjsm/2023/11/2…

Hot off the press: Muscle Matters: the Impact of Medically Induced Weight Loss on Skeletal Muscle. thelancet.com/journals/landi… @TheLancetEndo Pérdida de masa muscular con medicamentos para la pérdida de peso. Perda da massa muscular com medicamentos para perda de peso. “Regulatory agencies should provide more comprehensive guidelines for monitoring and evaluating body composition changes, mandate well-designed body composition studies, and enhance post-market surveillance." "GLP-1 receptor agonists have revolutionized obesity treatment and demonstrated substantial benefits... However, the potential impact of muscle mass loss as now observed remains a concern. These highly effective medications should be used strategically, in a multimodal approach to improve the quality of weight loss by optimizing body composition." Thanks to my dear colleagues/friends: @mackinprof @Kryz5559 and Steven Heymsfield for their partnership! @UofAALES @AlbertaDiabetes @UofAResearch Figure: Dual role of muscle as both a structural and metabolic organ.

How much exercise is needed to increase life expectancy? Turns out a little goes a long way. This new study in over 71,000 people (aged 60+) found: ➡️Higher volumes and intensities of exercise = greater benefits (up to 3.5 to 4.6 extra years for women and men, respectively). ➡️BUT - just a 10 min brisk walk daily was enough to add 0.9-1.4 years to modeled life expectancy. doi.org/10.1016/j.jshs…

Nothing recent about high protein 'causing' kidney problems. It's >50yr old hypothesis... We and others have shown this thesis is incorrect using RCT data and not observational data, which is what this study is. Still, on message with the fact the original thesis was incorrect. That's not intellectual dishonesty but simply how science works. Maybe you'll be wrong someday? Having the courage to admit it, or not, is where the dishonesty comes in!
AJAC@AJA_Cortes

Study fins that older adults with Chronic Disease have HEALTHIER kidneys from eating MORE protein not less In recent years the scientific perspective has been that high protein intake must be bad for people with Chronic Kidney Disease. This is why "Trust the SCIENCE" is a terrible practice and intellectually dishonest. Question the science, because it could change in the future. If high protein intake is protective for old people with chronic kidney disease, how would it possibly be bad for HEALTHY people with healthy kidneys?
