All my support for First Nations people who, like they’ve been for hundreds of years, were attacked again this week, by Nazis in Melbourne. Seeing a bunch of neo-Nazis charging into a crowd of First Nations women and people shows that centuries-old hatred and dehumanisation still persists, indeed with the economy of misinformation and racial vitriol escalating during the Voice referendum, it may be getting worse. This is certainly a racially-motivated hate crime, one that Australia is too well versed in. Decades of anti-immigrant and anti-Indigenous rhetoric from media and politicians has fuelled what we see today, and requires accountability. Nazis should be wholly rejected in every way, and returned to the dark places of history where they belong. The forces at play wanting to hold back recognition, reconciliation, truthtelling and healing cannot, and won’t prevail. There are too many good Australians who want to see us deal with our history and move on together without this endless vitriol, culture wars, racism, denialism and hate. Be one of them.
