@Local12 meteorologist just said on air that she was upset to see runners starting when they did this morning. Certainly cancelling would have been devastating but postponing for an hour to let the severe weather pass should have been done. Why wasn’t it, @RunFlyingPig & @WLWT?

Sounds like @RunFlyingPig coordinators were told to wait for weather to pass before starting by @WLWT. According to @Local12 first responders and race coordinators decided to put the decision to run during a thunderstorm in racers’ hands. Anyone care to comment?

@RunFlyingPig @RunFlyingPig it took your team way to long to issue this warning. A group of runners were almost just struck by lightning. I have decided to stop running because my life is a lot more important. I wonder who a jury would side with if you showed them this?

@RunFlyingPig Let’s not forget that the elite athletes are nowhere near any of the listed shelters at this time. What a farce. Will an explanation of why these decisions were made be given to the athletes. One is owed.

A shelter in place order has been issued. The following locations are available for shelter: Newport Aquarium Garage, Covington Marriot, Duke Energy Convention Center, and the Hard Rock Casino Garage

@RunFlyingPig Ah, so rather than postpone the race you send the athletes out into dangerous weather and then rely on a shelter in place order that will be difficult to communicate to those on the course between shelter areas to tell them to seek safety. I suppose it’s better than nothing.

@RunFlyingPig @WLWT Starting the race on time and sending athletes out into a severe thunderstorm with lots of lightning and potential hail shows a lack of caring for athlete safety. With how quickly the storms are passing you could and should have postponed. Irresponsible.

With the @WLWT Weather Team, we are closely monitoring the forecast. A weather system is coming through at 5:30am. We suggest staying in your car or under shelter. We are planning for an on time start at 6:30am.

@RunFlyingPig This second line of thunderstorms is intense and the fact that you started this race on time rather than postponing shows you do not care about athlete safety. Completely irresponsible. You owe all competitors an explanation of why this decision was made.
