Fuck yeah the Animal Crossing tote and Heart Container keychain I ordered for my sister like three months ago finally came in. I had actually given up hope for these ever showing up at all and was going to request a refund. Things worked out better this way heh.

@AubreanReverie The reaction to my SW videos has shown me that many people don't have any concept that art means anything at all other than looking pretty. The idea that images symbolize things or convey thoughts and emotions other than what they literally portray is completely beyond them

If this yokel knows a lot of kindergarteners that can make 10 foot wide layered geometrical compositions, he should look into scholarships for them immediately

@FedPoasting It's something a kindergartener could do and will be sold for more than the average salary in the US.

There's this notion in right wing and conservative circles that art has to necessarily be classically beautiful and rationally comprehensible to be considered art and a valid form of expression. They have a very narrow and surfacey conception of what constitutes beauty and meaning. It's quite sad.
Bugman Hegel@FedPoasting

@TheAgreementist When you look at a sunset you instinctively revere its beauty. Beauty is an embodied, instinctive response. It “insists upon itself.” It does not need to be rationalized.

I don't think most people understand the concept of nonrepresentational and non-narrative art. They can't wrap their minds around the idea that the function of some art pieces is not to convey messages or themes. To make rational sense. Some art pieces exist only to elicit emotions and sensations the viewer. They were made simply to get a reaction our of them. In some cases, the artist doesn't even know what particular kind of reaction he's after. He just wants to move and touch people by creating aesthetic experiences. It's as valid a form of expression as any other. Just because you can't cogitate it rationally, doesn't mean it's pointless or has no meaning. It could well be that the meaning is beyond spoken language to describe. Images are a language in their own right after all.

@FedPoasting People who talk shit about AbEx art, particularly Rothko, reveal themselves as having never seen one in person. Seeing it in a picture on a screen does not do it justice. Seeing it in person, standing in front of a Rothko actually on a wall, is an almost transcendental experience

Your first instinct is correct btw. This isn’t beautiful, this isn’t a masterpiece. In order for you to think it’s anything of the sort you have to override your innate understanding of beauty and the sublime and try and cognitively brute force yourself into viewing it as something that it is not. Often times this is done through an egotistical identification with “high society.” If this is valued in the millions by “experts” and it is considered “high status” to enjoy it, if I don’t also try and convince myself I enjoy it, I am a mere pleb. Beauty is in fact, objective, and we have an innate understanding and perceptual relationship with beauty. Rothko paintings are nothing of the sort.

‘Four Darks in Red’ by Rothko (1958). At the Whitney Museum. The heaviness of the black panel sinks into the painting. The weight. The burden. All else loses focus.
